    intake manifold questions

    Hi,
I'm currently looking at/for '99 to '01 MGM or Crown Vics but I believe that the intake manifolds on this will still be plastic and if I needed to replace it, I'm rather limited but I'm going to try to find out for sure.

In my area, there's not a lot of Ford performance parts garages/stores so I am wondering what I should do. The MGM '00 (for e.g.) uses the NPI engine so the aftermarket manifolds are mostly PI?

I'm wondering if there is part number that is consistent place to place. I researched online but it seems most of them apply to ones in the U.S. There seems to be a lot of Dorman parts but these are generally considered to be a '2nd choice' but to what? What is the brand of the better ones?

Then there's the Ford dealership parts choice but I think it will be really expensive and I'm not sure if the aftermarket one will be as good as the recommended PI ones?

Some junkyards near me list the aftermarket ones and some listings include 'with gaskets' etc. but I'm not sure which one they are. They range from $200 to $330.

If I find a '01 car, I most likely don't have to worry but many of the cars I'm finding are '98 to '00. If the intake manifold is plastic and is cracked or becomes cracked later, then I'm wondering if there an info sheet I could get that lists the part number and the gaskets/accessories needed to do the swap. The thing is, it needs to apply to Canadian shops and be available in Canada. I looked on ebay and they seem to be mostly dorman parts so it's not much help.

For e.g., the junkers list something like this:
    1W7E-9424-AA & AB (????) [NEW A/M WITH GASKETS]
    or
    F8AZ 9424-CA (I believe that means it's a Dorman part?!?)
    or
    ...
2004 - Intake Manifold - Ford Crown Vic -NEW A/M,FITS 99-06 CROWN VIC,4.6L <---would this fit? Which one would this be? brand/type?

Any advice on what to get or look for?

I just think I'm more likely to find a good '99 or '00 vehicle for the price/budget I have although I'm trying to find '01+ but they are usually very high mileage (or questionable condition) if in my budget.

    Thanks for any assistance.

    These sites look good?:

    the above applies to MGM?

Edit: One last question. How long does that job take if one has to replace the manifold (PI swap)? I think the manifold costs $300 + 3 to 5 labor hours or?

here is the PI intake for $200 http://adtr.net/sunshop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=15

you can find info on what it takes to install the PI intake on a NPi motor, IIRC it just requires a little RTV in two spots.

the labor book says 4 hours, most people can do it in 6 hours, i did it in just over 2 hours. it is pretty simple, pretty much only need an 8mm and a 10mm socket and maybe a screwdriver. I left the fuel rails and stuff hooked up, just popped the unjectors out of the manifold and laid the whole assembly off to the side.

i bought the intake for my 97 from a member on another board, i think i paid $150 for the intake plus he included a water neck. the factory ford intake has pre installed o rings around all openings, so it didnt need any other gaskets

Yeah. I bought mine from Napa (can't remember the price...might have been $280ish), it didn't need any sort of modifications to fit. Took somewheres in the area of 5-6 hours (including the time it took to push the Merc into the garage when it started raining after I started...

Go with the PI intake swap kit from ADTR. Its straight forward enough, and shouldn't require much on a '98+ ('96-'97 require alittle more modification to fit), and is supposedly good for about 15-20hp over a NPI manifold. The Dorman NPI manifold is okay, but doesn't flow quite as well as a Ford stock NPI, and not even close to a Ford PI manifold. That said, I installed the Dorman NPI manifold on my car 26k miles ago and has worked fine so far, and fit great w/ zero modification.
