    Stripping Chrome?

I picked up an awesome chrome plated ignition/steering column lock/chastity belt type thing from the junkyard a few weeks back.

It opens up like a clam shell then closes around the steering column and entirely covers the ignition lock cylinder and a shaft slide down and you place a master lock on her.

I have one problem with it....it has seen better days. Thing is rusting and chrome is peeling. How can I DIY remove the failing chrome?

Plan is to remove the chrome, paint it, felt the underside and add door edge guard to the sharp edges to protect my steering column cover.

    Thanks
    ~David~

I would think sanding would work fine, but that'll be a lot of work unless you use a power sander.

I have one of those. Mine is red and the lock is on the clamshell. Agree on the bead blasting

It's extremely affordable to just pay a chrome plating place to strip it properly for you. As far as I'm aware there's no effective DIY way to strip chrome at home, and if you rough it up until there's no shine on it there's a chance you can get paint to stick - but if it flakes off over time don't be surprised. The right way is to have a plater strip it to bare steel, then etch prime and paint.

          or better yet, powder coat.

Try oxalic acid (aka wood bleech) in powder form. Google it. It's good for removing rust and leaving paint alone, but it eats nickel, which is used in chrome plating.
It may not help but it will get the rust off.
