    Do we need premium fuel?

I've been putting regular unleaded, but try to at least find top tier fuel stations instead of off-brand. Does this engine need more octane?

Not sure what year or engine you're working with, but I don't believe any of these cars (except maybe the Marauder) need premium fuel in stock form.

I used to avoid gas with ethanol, but now use name brand gas like Shell and Texaco. I get discounts at the Shell with my Winn Dixie card. My 86 runs fine on low octane even with advaned timing. Not too advanced or it starts to pings.

Our cars stock don't have a hot enough spark for the higher octane nor the compression so essentially anything over mid grade is a waste.. But if you like running premium go for it! I do agree sticking to the name brands.. And ugh! Ethanol.. If you have the means to avoid do so

Marauder requires at least 91 Octane because of the higher compression ratio. I run 93 Octane because I like it and the tune is for 93 Octane.

Also ambient temperature makes a difference. My wagon really likes a higher octane rating in the summer, she tells me by pinging.

I have an 07 Gmq with the 4.6. I may try mid grade next time and see if that makes any difference.

Does it ping or knock under hard acceleration, like getting on the highway quick?

If it does not, than regular is fine.

In Florida during the summer I had to run at least mid grade to avoid pinging. With a 180°t-stat I can run 87 year round

The box doesn't always like 87. Pings once in awhile.

Usually run 89 in it to prevent it altogether.
1990 MGM: $50 E7 heads, HO cam, Holley SysteMAX lower intake, HO upper intake with an Explorer TB. LSC ECM. Lincoln logs into stock dual exhaust. K&N drop in air filter. Wide ratio AOD, 2400 converter with a 3.08 one tire fire out back. Car is less slow now. Then there's the '92 Beater. Dual 2.25" exhaust with shiny tips. Rumbles nice. Super slow. Burns oil too.

my 88 doesn't care... 87 year round. the 93 used to prefer 89 to 87... but the pi engine doesn't care... 87 year round. The Mark with it's 93 mustang 5.0HO doesn't care either... 87 year round.

My Subaru is the only car that runs well on regular. The 75 has to have Super. Everything else gets mid grade unless I go to Sam's club where they have only regular or Super, then they get Super.

I haven't tried hard acceleration yet to see if it knocks, but will today.
