    Aod she no shift...

I was teaching my son how to chk & fill the trans....

It is now way overfull.... typical symptom?

I suppose the only way to drop the level is to loosen the pan?

Is the shift governor supposed to be free to spinvaround the shaft?

Thread a vacuum hose down the dipstick tube and you can remove it that way. Though you may want to use a vacuum pump rather than your own mouth to suck up the fluid.

What sly said. Those squeeze pumps blow dogs for quarters so spring for the hand operated type for less frustration, they work well. Start with a cold engine, if you think its way past the full mark then suck a good portion out before starting it to check the actual level. Once you do that start it and let it run in park on a flat level surface. Now you can dial it with more suck or addition action. When its cold I add fluid until its about a quarter of an inch below the cross hatch area and then go drive it for awhile to get it all hot. Once that's done find another flat and level area and add or suck fluid out so that its in the cross hatch area. Hope all this verbage helps some.

What year is it? Did you guys mess with the T/V cable or linkage at all? What happened when you guys were working on it? Biggest doh I ever did was running it too low, shifted in gear but at times acted like it was in neutral. When I got my TC it was about a quarter of an inch over full when hot. Did you guys add more fluid than that and then try to drive it? I'm no trans guy but if everything else checks out there might be something going on with the valvebody/governor.

            Here's the deal.....

"There is a ball that sits in a hollow on the output shaft and a slot in the gov weight end. This stops the gov turning on the shaft. keep the gov weight end up to prevent the ball dropping out and getting lost.
If you got a complete unit slide new one on bolts forward, over ball in shaft pocket......"

yeah the governor spins with the output shaft. If you look inside of one, and on the shaft, you typically see some wear from the ball loading to one side. If yours wore to the point where the ball fell out, that might do it.

The ball fell out bc I took the gov off. It has been several years since I looked @ one & forgot that it even existed....

I found the ball & looked up the Gov install in my Helms manual.

However, It now does not appear to leave 1st gear, even if shifted manually.

The only other change was that It lost a good bit of fluid & We topped it off w/about a quart & a half of Merc V on top of the Merc III that was already in it.

The linkage was not touched & is operating correctly. The TV grommet is fine. The gov is a Transgo HP modded stock low rpm one from a CV.

                    Any Ideas?

                    Thanks

might be time to get out the old drivetrain manual and monitor the pressures to see whats going on.

Just out of curiosity, what was being done to or with the trans in the first place, just the fluid level? If there was any valve body work done, a dud 1-2 accumulator will leak enough pressure to keep it from upshifting. There is a whole troubleshooting thing in the drivetrain manual of what to check and how to rule out various things with pressure tests under certain conditions.

maybe swap it back. Might be stuck or not making enough speed to shift.

                              Yes!
Transgo wants me to send the bad one to them for a pm... They will either repair or replace it. Nice to see a company that stands behind their stuff.
Replaced the filter, refilled w/dex/merc III, they did not have straight mercon. I did not drain the 'vertor though, was late picking up my son as it was.
