The ad for the the 2001 says "Holly cow." Like, deck the halls? I hope their description of the car is more adequate than their English.
    Back in the saddle again!

It apparently belonged to an elderly gentleman who was a snowbird, so the car was in storage for winters. Which is nice! It doesn't have any of the factory performance upgrades, which means I will have to do some work to it once it is no longer a daily driver. Anything I need to know about the 2001 year?

Thanks in advance for any words of advice/support/encouragement.

I have seen that ad and nobody bought this car for two years! I don't know what wrong with this car??

You know those holly cows... always decorating, never giving a damn for what season it actually is. Come on, Bessy!! It's only November 14th!

2001 was a rusty POS. Description and photos were unbelievably inaccurate. Major bummer but also an easy decision.

Ok, so here's the next one I'm checking out. It's a million miles away in Port Elgin (ok, really just 2.5 hours into really nice country, but still a ways to go for a car).

I called the owner and here's the skinny:

He got it off of a relative about 5 years ago with 30K on the odometer.
Now has 188K on it (which is a lot of driving over a half decade... but my friend just put 170K on her Hyundai in 3 years so not unheard of in my circle of friends... ).
He took out the cloth seats and got rid of them because he would take his dog to the dog park and the hair was a pain to get off of the seats. Swapped in leather seats... but they're tan and it's a grey interior.
                  Oils it every year.
                  Uses synthetic for oil changes.
Traded paint with another car, so the whole thing apparently was repainted from the window belt line down.
Swapped out the air ride for standard shocks/springs.

The only things I'm worried about really are the miles and the damn mismatched coloured seats... if I did end up buying this thing, it would be a toss up between doing dual exhaust or finding some effing replacements ASAP. Let me know if there's anything else I should be leery of. The guy has a hoist and he's offered to put it up for me to inspect....

                  Updates on other stuff:

1998 in St Catherines - Johnny the mechanic never got back to me. Texted him a reminder yesterday... see what Monday brings. Left a voicemail with the owner too (his number is on an earlier ad)... odd message though, just him clearing his throat. I'm probably gonna pass on this one unless i miraculously get some photos and they show me an amazing car I would be stupid to pass up.

2001 Holly Cow - turd if there ever was one. Corrosion underneath, on the body and on the strut towers. The hoses looked shiny and old... like there were so many cracks on them it changed how light reflected off of them.

Some other contenders turned down by my wife because of age:

                  1. 1992 CV in Owen Sound area.

                  2. Countless boxes, two Mercury Zephyrs and a 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII.

Some would say 2004 is the best year since it has the PI motor and upgraded front suspension (and apparently repositioned rear shocks) but still has a throttle cable. There might be other things too, but those are the big ones that I know about. The mileage wouldn't bother me. My 2000 MGM has a slightly higher mileage, and I'm hoping to double it. The 2004 is too pricey for me though, especially if it doesn't already have dual exhaust. Judging from his other listings, he's essentially an experienced used car salesman (regardless of whether that's his actual vocation), so I'm not sure how much wiggle room you'd have on price.

Have you looked into the one in Newmarket?:

                    There's a seemingly nice 2004 in Brampton for $4,500:
                    http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/m...ationFlag=true

Also a 2004 in Cobourg that might have potential for $3,350:
                    http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/o...ationFlag=true

                    A pricier 2006 for $6,500 in Campbellville:
                    http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/o...ationFlag=true

Here are a few more that came up in Toronto/Mississauga:

Since you're seriously looking, it wouldn't hurt to go have a look for comparison purposes if they're close enough.

The price was a little high, but I figured if I can get it for between $2500 and $3000 Cert and E-Tested, that would be alright. I won't even offer anything until I look at it anyway. My real concern here is driving all that way for nothing. It will be a nice drive, but if I can avoid packing the baby up for 5 hours of driving, that would be best.

By Newmarket, do you mean the 1998 for $800? I left a message and never heard back. Can't be too eager to sell... or its gone already and the ad hasn't been taken down and they just can't be bothered to get back to me.

There were SOOOO many good options a few months ago and now it seems like I have nothing within a couple of hours of me worth while. It's rough.

The fellow in T-burg will be selling his, but he wants find a truck first (he's looking for a 2003-04 Z71) because he needs to vehicle to commute to work right now. That car is perfect for me but it just isn't on the market right now. It's very frustrating... part of me wants to wait, but the fam needs a second car.

I'll be calling around to a couple of mechanics that I trust to see if they know of anyone in the area who may have a good Panther and be willing to sell.

And again, if anyone from the Forum has a good whale for sale... please let me know ASAP! Save me a drive to Port Elgin to duke it out with this guy!

Or if there's someone in the St. Catherine's area who can let me know if that 1998 there being sold by Johnny the mechanic is any good, please hit me up with your knowledge!

Thanks for everyone who's followed this thread so far and extra thanks to those who are offering advice and commentary!

Thanks for the list! I didn't see it when I first responded.

I've seen these ads before. I'm kicking myself for not looking at the Cobourg one while I was there on Saturday. I showed the ad to the wife and she said no because of the paint damage... after she thought about it though she agreed that we should have gone to see it. Basically wasn't meant to be I guess.

I like the look of the Brampton one, but I don't like this "I'm selling it for someone else" crap that seems to be way too prevalent in these ads!

                        Campbellville is too much budget.

I do like that blue 1999 with 115K on it though! It looks like it has potential.

And like you say, it doesn't hurt to look at more than one car. The only thing is I'm feeling the pressure of no car. Michelle is fine with it, but I would feel much better if I knew her and the baby had a car that wasn't a 1966 Beetle to use. We're borrowing the in-law's car right now but that ends on the 26th!

Hopefully something comes up in the next day or two!

                        Thanks again!

                            Ok so here's the latest.

Brampton was a no go. I came in swinging with my best offer and was turned down flat.

However, Port Elgin 2004 came down in price a bit and we made a good deal. I'm going to get the car on Wednesday (as long as its good when I get there). I'll have my mechanic do the safety and etest on it and save a bit. The car has new brakes on it too... and it comes with snows on rims, so that saves me some hassle. I'm excited, guys!

I think this is for the better. That 04 had too many miles and a mismatched interior that would annoy you after a while.
