Dang, both my '90s still have R12 in them and work. Well, not the dead one now I guess, but it did. Not looking forward to retrofit but it'll have to come sooner or later I guess.

Retrofit is cheep. Just need the kit and juice once the R12 is evacuated, nothing else has to change. I'd run the R12 until it stops choochin'.

What kit are you talking about? I kind of doubt I could get mine converted and up and running before summer hits. It has zero pressure left.

Yeah I think the fittings literally screw on to the old ones right? Then you put some funky oil in it and charge up with 134. Called a "dirty conversion" by the mechanic folk but apparently it works. I'm told you can do it right by changing a whole shit-ton of other stuff but generally the dirty way works so screw it. Gonna be a while before I do that shit because I have a friend with a BIG can of R12 and he owes me a favor or 2.

    Yeah, exactly.
The way I had our TC's done was to take it to a shop and let them do it haha. What they did was evac the system, replace the receiver/drier, evac it again and then recharge with 134a. Been working great ever since, well, my car blew up the compressor last year but then again it has zero pressure when I got it and an old guy owned it. You know how old people are about certain things. According to him, he never used it unless his wife complained and when I bought the car she had been in the ground for 12 or some years.

Tightened this upper hose and stopped a small leak.

How can I flush and change out the PS fluid?

Are use the turkey baster method to get out as much as I could. This is what I got out and the other is what is going in for reference.

Boxes want Type F ATF for power steering. Power steering fluid is actually too thin for them.

X2 on this, do not put anything other than type F in there. Noise and more effort will probably be noticed if you do. Actually Dexron type II can also be used, that is what is in mine and has been for nearly 2 years with no issues. It's getting hard to find type F.

I put reman new Motorcraft pumps on the 89 and 90 - both I filled with Mercon V. Both are very quiet especially for a Ford power steering system.

They should be very quiet unless people abused the system by holding it at lock in either direction or ran them out of fluid. Seems the Ford trucks we get are always noisy to some extent due to abuse. Why Ford didn't just put a limiter in the steering wheel to prevent that is beyond me. The GM trucks we have bought are all quiet, Firebird is quiet even when steering in place. Nice set-up by GM I guess. The one in my '69 Plymouth is also very quiet. One finger steering with that thing.

My beater is very quiet... even with it's small leak. People always marvel at how quiet that car is (after it warms up).
