    ignition parts recommendations

My 91 CP with 5.0 lopo is telling me it's high time I replaced plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Any recommendations on quality parts without taking out a mortgage?

Boring stock Motorcraft plugs, any cap with brass terminals, and whatever wires you like that aren't the absolute cheapest ones you can get. Last set of Motorcraft wires I bought were not stupidly priced. Duraleast Gold are also fine.

FYI the Motorcraft caps are not brass. I can't remember what brand I managed to find that was.

yeah, they're aluminum. I think I may have either a Blue Streak part on my car, or maybe its also a Duraleast.

Accel are brass and seem to last. Agree with Motorcraft plugs or NGK. I use Motorcraft wires which seem to fit better.

Thanks guys. Local Autozone seems to have the Accel brass terminal cap and the motorcraft copper plugs. May have to order the duralast gold wires but they are listed. Should be able to get the whole shabang for a C note or less.

Check Rockauto and use the coupon code found on this site for 5% off. They might be cheaper... or not.

Got a set of Auto Tune wires from rock auto direct fit for my 90 for like 8 bucks on close out. They very high quality from what I can tell so far. My 88 has had a set of Accel super stock wires in it for a decade and they are still holding up nicely.

The summit racing brand has brass caps (have one in my beater). And you can get it in a cap/rotor set.

Accel cap & rotor has never let me down.

Spark plugs, AC Delco, NGK, Motorcraft.

Wires: rockauto is hard to beat, especially if you are in Canada. The closeout stuff just makes the cake all that much better. I got a set of duralasts on closeout for 8 bucks. Figured if they last a year I'd still be ahead. Still on the truck a couple years later. In the meantime acdelco wire sets came up on closeout and picked that up for 10 bucks and they're still sitting in the box waiting to go in.

                    Alex.

Given budget constraints I began dealing with these one bit at a time. Got the plugs and dove into replacing those.

I started on the passenger side. Note to self: next time try unmounting the smog pump control valve first. When I got to the driver side I removed the airbox and plenum for better access and behold the #5 spark plug wire (right under the airbox mount) was disconnected and hanging free. I thin' we found the problem. 😀 I went ahead and finished and after hooking everything back up she runs like a dream.

No doubt I will do the wires, cap, and rotor just because it's time.

This is the timing pointer right?

                            Sure is.
Mark the balancer with something and point a timing light at that spot.
I tend to use white out to make my marks but chalk, soapstone, a piece of tape, or whatever you want to use should do.
Put your mark at the 10 btdc mark, disconnect the spout connector, hook up the timing light and (with the engine running, of course) you should see your mark at the flat (right) edge of that pointer each time the light flashes. You can go up to 12-13 btdc, but stock is 10. Starting at the stock setting while troubleshooting an issue would probably be your best bet.

In a quick look while I was under there today the only thing I saw on the balancer was a trough in the balancer about 1/8" wide (kind of looked like a key way). If I turn the crank by hand will the markings be obvious?
