Nice work Matt and John. The car is looking good Matt. Wheels look right at home in my opinion.

Looks like lack of lube failure, and the con rods welded themselves to the crank for a brief period until they twisted off. The blue on the crank indicates extreme heat. I'll go with oil pump failure or something blowing out and dumping a lot of oil past it. Maybe hydraulic tensioner failure? Not sure if those are straight off the main oil feeds or what.

Agreed. That thing was oil starved. About the only thing that causes that without actually just running it out of oil is if something blocks the pickup screen. The typical cause of that is nylon shreds from the timing chain guides, but you usually have a ton of warning from the noise under the timing covers that they are eating themselves long before it plugs the oil pump. Don't see timing chains failing, or pumps failing, or really any other significant failures with a 4.6 very often. Its a pretty robust engine, especially the bottom end with its deep skirt block and cross-bolted main bearing caps. They don't make a lot of power but they run forever and can handle a lot of abuse.

There sure is a ton of oil film built up under that timing cover. At some point or another that engine had its oil seriously neglected. I've seen 250k mile 4.6s that were spotless under the cover, but those were well maintained.

timing chain guides collapsed and the pickup tube was clogged with remnants of broken timing chain guides is my guess why it blew up.
