How to adjust door latches?

    I'm confident you can get the doors to close without noise, mine don't make any and I have to yell at people to stop slamming them. They figure old car so shitty and thus need more effort but they're dead wrong, especially with the rear doors which require almost zero effort to close.

      The weatherstripping is often the hard part. It is heavy compared to the modern stuff so I think it will always require a bit more force to close.

      If the door is set too far in, too close to the body or the top or the bottom hits first then it would require more force then necessary to close. These are all the door side hinge adjustments.

      Gadget is correct about the sound of light metal parts rattling around on the inside.

        Ok I am gonna rip the door panel off tonight (has to come off anyway) and insulate the hell out of everything inside and see where that takes me.

            Yes and no. You can bend the channel the weatherstripping rests on top of and it may help things.

              Have you sprayed down the latch in the door yet with lube? My favorite, motorcycle chain lube. Sticky and slippery.

                I screwed around with it a bunch more tonight. Ended up bringing the door way out which destroyed the gaps so I had to loosen the fender and pull it as well. The result was worth it. I can close it with a finger now but I still don't get that fancy modern car sound. I'll probably be looking at swapping some modern latches in there.

                Oh and inside the door makes all kinds of noises. There is literally zero reinforcement inside the door and the window regulator just attaches to the inner shell. It rattles the whole door pretty good and I am not sure if there is any way around it. I might try dynomatting the whole inner shell to quiet it down some.

                  Mine don't go click-clack like that. Sounds like the latch is dry. Mine give a more solid "chunk" when it shuts, though still doesn't quite sound "modern".

                  The doors on these are pretty poorly made honestly. Not much structure in there, flat sheet metal ain't worth a damn for stiffness. The outer skin has some ribs to stiffen it, but the inner skin has nothing but weight from the regulator stuck to it. Run the window up and down and you can see the whole thing flex.

                    The '87 and '97 have similar clacky doors, except the '87 has a more of a hollow sound when the doors shut. I've never been a fan of that dull sound most newer cars make.

                          Is the striker good? usually a missing plastic sleeve makes it do that. Also looks like the door isn't adjusted quite right. I see body line mismatch from the front door to the rear.

                            So I was at the wreckers today and did some research on what cars have quietest doors.

                            1st place: Lexus, newer Honda Civic (2000+), old Mercedes (early 90s), some Mazdas (mostly newer but depends on the model), some VWs (Jettas sound decent).

                            2nd place: Volvo, Saab, some GMs.

                            3rd place: Hyundai, Toyota.

                            Last place: I would rate most Fords sadly as the loudest. Chrysler is up there as well. BMW E46 sounds awful too.
