    Tire compatibility question

My 1997 Town car has 215 70 r 15's on them. Can I get away with putting 235 75 r15, or will that throw off the speedo a whole lot

Speedometer will be about 5 MPH slow. Using a tire size calculator, if your speedometer says you're going 65, you'll actually be going 69.9.

235/75-15 is the 4x4 light truck tire, they're about 28" tall. The factory 215s are like 25" tall or so. Huge difference once on the car, both visually and in performance - the big tires will feel like you're hooked to a trailer all the time, and they'll want to chew the lips on the front fenders.

Do 225/70-15, it was the police car tire size, they fit on the wheels better and they don't throw the speedometer off much at all, and they also don't rub on shit when in actual use.

235/65-15s need wider wheels to fit properly, at least 7" wide - Towncar alu wheels are 6.5" wide, yes that half an inch difference does make a difference, pun intended.

Take a look at 90s Ford Explorers and late 90s and 2000's Rangers. That's what the tire size is and those are 235's on a 7" wide wheel. It doesn't look happy though it protects the wheels from curb rash because the tires push out so much.
