So for a while I've been considering the addition of boost once I do my HO/347 swap. Because I live in commiefornia I have to pass bullshit smog every 2 years, which consists of not only a tailpipe emissions test, but a visual which includes scrutiny of "performance" parts. Anyhow, this is one of a list of reasons I got rid of my '98 p71 and bought a '90, not to mention I like 5.0 pushrod motors better. Anyhow, there are more CARB-approved performance parts available for the venerable old 5.0, including supercharger kits. Unfortunately, stupid Ford decided to make panther accessories a stupid mess instead of using the simple HO accessories and belt-routing. I considered converting to an HO accessory drive to allow for the installation of inexpensive and easy-to-find mustang supercharger kits. However, with some consideration I decided that would be a bitch for a number of reasons.
Then it crossed my mind; they used to make a bolt-on twin-turbo kit for the fox mustangs that was actually smog legal here and even used the factory(mustang) exhaust downpipes. Being that my exhaust system consists of a mustang h-pipe, this works fine. Only downside is that these kits haven't been made in over 10 years and most people that have them seem to think they're made of gold. Anyhow, if I can find one for the right price, i'm buying it. The basic kit makes fairly low boost out of 2 little turbos, but they produce a fuck-ton of torque, which is what a 2-ton boat needs.
All that aside, I've been considering a funny experiment: I'd like to get this kit and install it on the lo-po before doing my swap. Just think it would be hilarious to see what kind of numbers this turd makes, and how it drives. While i'm sure it won't make it a mustang-killer, it certainly would liven things up and maybe surprise a few people. It obviously is a bit sketchy but my confidence is slightly boosted by the fact that because my car is a '90 California car, it's a MAF car already so everything is pretty much plug-and-play. Intake piping will need to be modified a bit to account for the backward intake manifold, but aside from that and possible clearance issues, it should all go right in. Obviously it would benefit from custom-tuning, but I don't plan for this to be a long-running setup, just a funny experiment. All I need is a couple grand to spend and somebody to sell me a kit that doesn't smoke crack. Sound like fun?
