Not for functionality, I still reap the benefits of throttle response. Gonna get the whole lot tuned once I get some better rear gears though, slowly adding parts until I do. JMOD is next, still not sure if I want to try and find a set of cams due to costs. After that a tune will be in order though

Were you able to use the P71 air filter box/MAF without a tune? BTW, you should set up a signature with your car and mod info. It's one of the settings in your profile.

2000 Grand Marquis LS HPP, a hand-me-down in 2008 with 128,000 km; 175,000 km as of July 2014
mods: air filter box "tuba" (in place of the "trumpet"), headlight relay harness, J-mod (around 186,350 km), 70mm throttle body, NKL4 PCM (from a 2000 CVPI, nothing great there apart from highway cruising), KYB Gas-A-Just shocks (after >202,000 km on originals)

I did use it without a tune, had a lean light at first but removing the ground for a few apparently did the trick. Haven’t had a light since. I do like the way it feels though, butt dyno likes it.

Hmmm, I wonder if later non-CVPI PCMs were given enough tolerance for the larger MAF. One possible way for the cheap people like me to avoid the expense of a custom tune might be to use a CVPI computer whose stock tune is based on the 80mm MAF, though I guess torque converter size and rear gears would be factors.

Decided to postpone rear gears until next year, and abandon the silly hood ornament idea for now. Gonna get her tuned for the throttle body, air box, and exhaust with 93 octane

Got my tune in the mail from Marty today. Shift points may need a little adjustment, but otherwise it feels like the car lost 200lb or something

Good to hear. I may end up throwing my zip tube/80mm MAF/ Airbox on as well, since it's taking up room in my garage, and see how well it runs (or how far I can push the stock computer).
    Keep it up.

It should run well enough on the stock computer man. I didn’t run into any issues until I added a bigger throttle body into the mix

I also PI swapped a non-PI car. Still using the stock computer.

Well, we’re on day 2 in the parking lot, and the car is getting towed to a dealer tomorrow morning. Control arm job went wrong.

Ball joint stripped, so I hired a mobile mechanic service to come out and finish the job while I was at work. They managed to break one strut in disassembly and punch a control arm bolt far enough in to cut halfway through the spring on the other side, while cutting through the bad ball joint with a sawzall. Tried to fix it myself, but I couldn’t figure out how to do the spring with the bolt lodged in it so I could remove that arm. Ended up calling the mobile guy everyone in my store uses. He started work today, but it won’t be done until Wednesday or so since he has some other customers he had lined up already while working on mine. Went that route instead of the dealer cause it’s a lot cheaper still

Switched over to red tails instead of grey ones. I have a second set that I am chopping up to make sequentials work, deemed th greys too expensive to replace if I botch the job

I make it a point to park next to those whenever I can. It looks silly.

It’s even made worse when there’s larger compacts than it, that not only get more MPG on Regular, but also are more practical and usually cost less.

Popped one of the Dorman heated seats in the car today. Discovered I put the heater element too far forward on the bottom of the seat, but it does it’s job well, which is the point.
