Could it be the resistor/module, by the passenger side firewall??? Also, the blower motor has a very different sound, more course and loud. A/C works but the climate control...the light "Auto" remains illuminated no matter what I select.

yeah could very well be the speed controller. Often its just bad solder in the module.
Blower might be dying or have crap in the wheel. Probably worth pulling to make sure its not half full of leaves. Clean the box out and shoot some oil on the shaft while its apart.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
