    1992 Grand Marquis upgrades

    Hi all,

Hopefully I’m posting this in the right area.... first time posting on this forum

I recently bought a 1992 Grand Marquis GS and have several questions about her. I’ve been trying to find new parts on the web for it.... I’ve heard a throttle body spacer and cold air intake are affordable performance upgrades for a car like this but the only websites that sell those parts for this car look really sketchy. Any recommendations? (And if those mods won’t work on this car let me know— first time owning a car like this.)

Also... one of my side markers is broken and since I need to replace it anyways I am wondering how hard it would be to wire in cornering lamps like the LS model...

    Thanks in advance!

Welcome! I parted a 92 G.M. and I have a bunch of miscellaneous parts for sale. I have the drivers front marker light with cornering lamp,(comes with an NOS pigtail for the Corn. lamp.) As far as I know, all cars are wired for the cornering lamps but the relays need to be plugged in? Maybe someone here can shed some light on this.(pun intended!) WagonMan

Don't bother with throttle body spacer or cold air intake. You won't notice a performance difference. 1991-1995 4.6 engines have poor flowing heads and intake. You are better off swapping to a PI engine from 01' or newer car if you actually want to see any significant gains.

Mods that do work are dual exhaust and rear gears.

A 92' will take a lot of money to see any real performance gains and imo you are better off starting with a car that already has a better engine and transmission. Enjoy the 92' for what it is, a big comfortable cruiser.

Also find a decent rear sway bar. Big brakes are also nice when the time comes for front end work.

If it's got an aod, ditch the 4.6 and put a in 302 or a 351. If it's got an AODE, do what Mr. Bean said.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss early 4.6 2V as just a reliable daily driver powerplant. There are go-fast parts out there- take these long tube headers for 2V Mustangs which can likely be made to fit.* https://lmr.com/item/BBK-15410/96-04...g-Tube-Headers

Long runner intake plenums from '97-'06 4.6 2V powered trucks and vans is an interesting option. I know for a fact the intake runners on those are 14 inches long, but I couldn't find stock panther intake runner length for comparison. Also the design of the truck/van plenum as a whole would likely affect clearance and fitment on our panthers**. More info on long runner 4.6 2V plenums here... http://www.mre-books.com/sa115/sa115_2.html

There's also a torque camshaft from Lunati that piqued my interest. More power from idle to 5000 RPM is exactly what the 4.6 2V needs: http://www.lunatipower.com/Product.aspx?id=2570&gid=289

*I bought long tubes for HO 302 Mustangs for use on Ebyt. They definitely needed work to clear the frame, steering shaft, etc. But it can be done! I imagine you will run into similar clearance issues with 4.6 2V Mustang headers on an aero panther.
**Worst comes to worst, you just get stock heads and intake plenum ported. Better than nothing. You'll absolutely need an EEC-IV tune if you run a different camshaft or intake plenum, or if you have stock pieces ported.

Now in terms of chassis and handling, you've got tons of options.... this is just some of my bulk parts list for whatever aero panther(s) I end up buying in late summer/early fall...

You will need new rear axles to run the linked 31 spline parts. Order a set from Moser, part #100008322. Thanks to BlackVic for the info there. Know that just a simple re-gearing will yield you more acceleration- a TracLok equipped 8.8 with 3.27 or 3.55 final drive will help immensely over stock.*** Went from 2.73 open to 3.27 TracLok on my '89 and it felt a LOT better. Pulls out of corners with authority now, especially with the new summer tires.

***Unless you got an HPP/Tow package car with 3.55 TracLok rear end from the factory. Very rare, but I know of one semi locally.

Good to know... can anyone else confirm the GS is wired for cornering lamps...?

The wiring is there above the parking brake, but the relays and wires to the corner lamps are not present.

You’re gonna want to swap the top end (heads, intake, etc) off the 2001+ panthers, get the PI heads and intake. You’ll have to reconfigure the throttle body cable to make it work. ADTR sells catted long tube and catless long tube headers you can use, plus a 70mm Throttle Body I recommend. You’ll want to find a Marauder air box and a new zip tube, you’ll also probably have to hit up ADTR there. A 2.25” dual exhaust would do you wonders, along with a 3.55+ rear axle ratio though. You’ll feel the most difference with adding an HPP/Marauder 21mm rear sway bar though, anything larger and you’ll need to upgrade the trailing arms for the rear axle.
