Default Box Tailpipes vs Flowmaster 815802 GM A-body Tails

As mentioned in WAYWO 2021: http://www.grandmarq.net/vb/showthre...l=1#post859967

Earlier this year I saw someone mention that the 60s RWD GM A-body tailpipes may be usable for a Panther, and along with that, it was mentioned that Flowmaster manufactures a set of tailpipes for those cars in 409 stainless, 2.5" piping. That set is Flowmaster part number 815802 and it is readily available at various vendors...seems to be in active production.

I bought a set of them knowing that for one of my cars (at the time not yet decided), I would have an opportunity to use them, as most of my exhausts are made of despair at this point. I purchased my set from https://truckpartsuperstore.ca/ in February 2021 for $244 Canadian. Not cheap but they're decent pieces.

This thread is only going to serve to provide a photographic comparison against stock box tails, presently, as I don't have a car positioned suitably to mock up fitment. I might come back down the road to add to this, of course.

The stock box tails pictured are aftermarket replacement, but stock fitment, removed from a 1983 Town Car. At the muffler end, they were cut shorter than new stock replacement tailpipes (by a couple inches).

My take at this point is that they're a little short, and might have to hang down a little bit due to fitment in the area of the fuel tank, but without mocking up under a car I'm not completely sure on that.

I plan to attempt to use a set of these under my ‘87 since I’m fitting shorty headers and redoing the whole exhaust back. They will be cut down and fitted for wagon side exits if they fit worth a damn.

It’ll be interesting to see how they fit… all you need is for them to clear the axle, coil springs, upper control arms, fuel tank and tire…right? Fingers crossed that they do work so we have a good replacement for the discontinued walker/dynomax impala SS tails. Good luck and keep us posted!

Yup, that’s supposed to be everything they need to clear.

Just waiting for them to ship. Seems like there’s a lead time on them (I ordered mine through Holley), so that’s the only slow down. Guess I should work on getting other stuff done in the interim.
