so the shop did up an old 85 mustang block. its now a 306. everything is pretty well done. just got a two core radiator. the only thing left is a distributer. it already has a 6al ignition box and accel coil and an a9p with explorer intakes. which distributer should i go with? it looks like theres one with vacume..

I would rebuild a stock distributor.
Never had any luck with msd tune up parts.

1986 lincoln towncar signature series. 5.0 HO with thumper performance ported e7 heads, 1.7 roller rockers, warm air intake, 65mm throttle body, 1/2" intake spacer, ported intakes, 3.73 rear with trac lock, 98-02 front brake conversion, 92-97 rear disc conversion, 1" rear swaybar, 1 3/16" front swaybar, 16" wheels and tires, loud ass stereo system, badass cb, best time to date 15.94 at 87 mph. lots of mods in the works 221.8 rwhp 278 rwt
2006 Lincoln Town Car Signature. Stock for now
1989 Ford F-250 4x4 much much more to come, sefi converted so far.
1986 Toyota pickup with LSC wheels and 225/60/16 tires.
2008 Hyundai Elantra future Revcon toad
1987 TriBurner and 1986 Alaska stokers keeping me warm. (and some pesky oil heat)

please be patient, rebuilding an empire!

Yeah... unless you're going to run an HEI dizzy, or external ignition module, a stock one will work just fine. The MSD coils have a reputation of just dying. Either way, buy the one for the block. A 306 is a 302 block. So get the one that fits a 302 and matches your cam material (steel or iron). If you do not match the material, you will destroy the iron one.

Can confirm- MSD coils are junk. One almost got me killed and another died while my car was idling in the driveway. Their distributor caps are trash too. My Fireturd sports an MSD billet distributor with a stock cap and coil, because those are parts which haven't failed.

As I'm sure most of you are aware - I'm a BIG believer in OEM whenever possible, especially on electrical/calibrated parts. Sockets and some connectors you can probably get away with but most ignition parts and sensors - NO!

            This is critical advice.

            Roller cam = steel gear

            Flat tappet = iron

There are also composite and bronze gears available, but they are usually race spec only.

I believe there is an application for a DS2 distributor with the steel gear ('85 Mustang HO w/ roller grind). Otherwise you can buy at steel gear and put it on any old DS2, but you have to install it at the right height to get the proper mesh.

If you're using Explorer intakes, that implies EFI. What specific EFI though? Thats going to drive the distributor choice. EEC-IV, use a stock distributor.

and big +1 on matching the diz gear to the cam. Roller cam = steel gear. Flat tappet cam = I made a mistake, go get a roller cam.

Yea it is a shame to hear that about MSD it was good in the day. I am guessing it is China made now? NOS USA made stuff is likely still good.

The Mustang guys have referred to it as Might Suddenly Die for a long time, but thats the goofy piggy-back MSD with TFI setup they sold for the Fox cars. No idea what that was supposed to accomplish but it seemed to just be an extra gizmo in the mix that can break.

I always refer to those parts as "My Spark Diasappeared", lol.. It's funny how people will pay more money for colored aftermarket coils/caps that fail vs. the stock ones that will run much longer. If you want a particular color scheme underhood then just paint the stock parts and rock on.
These are highly engineered precision vehicles, the first step in diagnosing the problem is to strike the suspected offending part sharply and repeatedly with a blunt object, then re-test.
