    cougar xr7 tranny

my lil bro needs a car, and hes in a far off province where cars suck, so im looking for him. theres a slim chance i can get a cougar xr7 that needs a tranny. im wondering if this tranny is the same aod thats in the towncar? xr7 has the 5.0 ho. the ad says the tranny slips when you give throttle, but kicks in after a few seconds.

i figure i got a spare towncar tranny after i do the swap..

Is the thunderbird / cougar AOD longer than the Crown Vic / Grand Marquis / Town Car AOD?

The XR7 in 87-88 had a regular EFI 5.0. Maybe someone swapped an HO into it. Earlier XR7s had the turbo 2.3L like the TurboCoupes.

        worth measuring...

i know that towncar trans are usually longer...

if the cougar trans is the same as a mustang, it will be the same as a crown vic...

I know the Town Car's had a longer transmission length the the CV/GM, but I think it was in the tailshaft, which would be a relatively simple change I believe. What about the shifter linkages? The Cougar is floor shifted, while the TC is column. The linkages would probably interchange, but you need to look and make sure.

          Crawl under there and measure!

Shift linkage is not that major of an operation to swap out. Actually any non-Lincoln AOD should fit. Lincoln ones are the bastard children and got the oddball parts that don't fit in anything else.

The tail shaft is swapabe....but, you it is located in the tranny body all the way at the back, so to swap them you have to be prepared to tear down your tranny to a complete 100% bare shell to get to it.

"Car is not being driven anymore, cant afford this car, looking for new one. Needs a bit of work to pass safety and emissions. This car still runs, i start it every few days and take it around the block to let all the liquids in the engine run through to keep it alive. Idles nice. Major problem would be the transmission which slips when it tries to go. Kicks in after a couple seconds. Some rust could be fixed, and a bit of the underbody is rusted. Would need a good tuneup and a fixed transmission to be running smooth again. I am the second original owner of this car. Good for parts or project car "

im thinking i may keep it if i like it.
