Default Unusally heavy vapor mists coming from the dashboard!(OFF)

It's one thing after another, This is unusual, at least in my limited experience. My 84 TC has a "vapor mist" with an antifreeze /"oil" smell that comes from the dashboard after I start it ,sometimes it's "heavy" as soon as I start the car. Other times it doesnt get bad until it runs for 15 min. In any event I know my heater core is shot. But even at this rate "should the mist be "so thick" at times it looks like there's something burning inside the car? It's so bad you cant sit in the car while it's running. Theres more,.. I think I have a loose valve cover or bad gasket on the "passenger side" of the engine because the engine starts smoking after it gets hot ,but only comes from that bank. I'm also aware that the heater core is in that area as well! Could they( the two mists) be connected?? Am I looking at something unusual or at something disastrous!!

Get that heater core replaced. I have seen cores bust open and pour coolant into the car. Also Check for leaking oil from the passenger valve cover. oil is probably getting on the exhaust manifold.

    Welcome to GMN btw!

if the steam smells like antifreeze,it's the heater core..........it's approx a 5 hour job to replace it, but well worth the effort for heat lol

I realize this is an old thread, but...
I have this exact same problem (fog in the car, steam/smoke from under the hood). How urgent is this problem? If I only drive it for 2 miles at a time (cold starts each time), from home to school, will I be OK? How much will this repair cost me?

    Default Thanks

Hey thanks for the help... I ended up bypassing the heater core. I had a leaky hose anyway, and since it's spring now, and since I don't have the money to replace the heater core, this is a good temporary fix.
