2004 CVLX: the new winter beater

    Just scored this one.

    2004 CVLX.
    134k.
Moonroof, steering wheel HVAC/stereo, EATC, cloth interior. RUST. It was a NY car for the first three years of its life, then bought in '07 by the CVNer I bought the car from.

The seller is moving to FL next week and needed to offload the car quick. It's worth more than I paid for it. I didn't need or want a car, but he threw that number at me and I couldn't resist.

The car needs brakes - BADLY. Super soft pedal, and the rotors and pads are trash. I suspect a leaky brake line somewhere, too. Steering shaft is pretty seized up and PB Blaster didn't do anything to help it. Luckily, I've got one of those on hand. It might also need a blower motor resistor, because that's finicky. But the A/C is cold and it passed emissions...

This is the bad side of the car.

Yes, the interior is that clean.

If its rusty and cheap but working thats the perfect winter beater recipe.

Do those 3 years in NY make it that much worse than if it was always in OH, or does it really just depend where in NY?

Love that color of blue. Needs a good detail and I'd bet that paint would shine up nice. New grille and strip the black off the rear panel trim and rock it. I'd throw some tint on it too.

Rust doesn't look too bad yet. Could probably be saved but can't see under it and I know the 03+ cars like to rust up a lot quicker. Hope it can be cleaned up and maybe spray it down with some oil on the underside to keep it from eating it alive.
These are highly engineered precision vehicles, the first step in diagnosing the problem is to strike the suspected offending part sharply and repeatedly with a blunt object, then re-test.

It’s nice to have a winter beater for sure. Get some chains for it and pull 4x4 SUV owners out of ditches for $20 a pop.

          Moonroof factory?

The wife’s Escape spent 2.5 years in Michigan (three winters) and it’s a rusty turd.

Think it depends on where in NY it was. This was from Holland, so it's been a snow belt car since 2004.

It's sneaky bad. Probably not worth much more than a grind down/POR-15/spraybomb. I'll Fluid Film it, that's about it. No mods other than maybe swapping Stick Vic's swaybar on, and then finally outfitting Stick Vic with the rusty used Addco I've had laying around for 2 years.

Yeah, it's one of those altered VIN # moonroof cars that was shipped from STAP to the upfitter, then back.
Don't think I'll be pulling anyone out with the 2.73 open diff, but snow tires are definitely gonna help.

I had a crappy old 1/3 can of Krylon that I was sick of looking at, so I did this.

Was gonna bumper tuck, but this is by far the rustiest Panther I’ve ever seen and tucking would just make it easier for people to see how bad it is.

Does that grille have a smaller emblem stuck on it?

At least the car does a good job of hiding the ugly underneath. For the price, you stole the darn thing, even if it’s just a beater.

                    Yeah, it’s a Chinese grille with a too-small badge.

Here's a video that was used as an example on CVN:

For the sake of getting some aerodynamic benefit, I used a piece of vinyl siding between the bottom of the trunk and the bottom of the bumper cover without any tuck:
