    Carby 302

I found a craigslist 82' Cougar XR7, think of it as a mini-box. But it has the god awful 255 engine in it and if I bought the car that would be getting abused and then yanked. Then a 302 goes in its place, most likely keep it carbed for simplicity. I also need to continue to pass emmissions, both visual and dyno because I plan to drive the car more than 5k a year.

Now for this case, I have a lighter car and nothing but accessories and emmissions parts to pull off the 255. So am I better off starting with a HO engine from a mustang or lincoln or going straight to the explorer engine with the better heads? I think HO engines around here go for $300-$500, some with AOD's still attached. I havent found any pricing on the explorer engines.

I bet scott or mike know where to find a good deal on a explorer engine...

Around here you can pick up a Explorer 5.0 for $500. The HO's run about the same, the yard owners must think HO's are gold mines.

Can I buy the carb off the 255?

I just happened to look at one of these Box T-Birds over the weekend (looking for a 2150 carb). I open the hood and there sits a 200 six. It barely fit! Shut the hood and went on my way. Why would someone order a loaded T-Bird (with leather for God's sake) and a six banger.

the 200 I6 probably made as much or more power than the 255 lol. The 302 back then was fairly pathetic too.

Around here if the U-pull yards get a fox mustang the motor will be pulled within hours of it arriving at the yard, but there are always a couple of Mark 7s with untouched motors... Idiotas!

Mark VII are usually a better donor anyway. More room, so its easier to pull the motor, and most of the time Lincolns don't get beat as badly as Mustangs do, so the engines are generally in better shape. When I tore down the 120k mile motor from my Mark VII parts car, it was in excellent shape internally. I've seen used Mustang motors with half melted pistons and pistons that literally flopped in the bores.

Inline six's usually have lots of torque and are very reliable. I wouldn't mind an old T-Bird with a 300 straight six if it fits. Check out this site: http://www.fordsix.com/

The 300 is pretty big to fit in an old fox, I dont know of any that have been completed. I had a car with a 200 six, it was anemic. One of the worst head deisgns ford has. Made about 80 wheesy horsepower. But it had an awesome semi-truck sound with an open manifold. lol

And Im not short changing myself this time, Im getting the GT40 heads, no more E7's. Finding an explorer engine is the most cost efficient way to do it. One of you guys can have the intake, I want to go carbed too.
