    Synthetic motor oil

Has anybody ever replaced the mineral motor oil with synthetic motor oil in a tired engine such as one with over 200+k? I've read about the benefits one would recieve from improved lubrication from synthetics in a new engine, but I haven't heard anything about older engines.

If the motor isn't leaking bad it shouldn't be an issue. I ran synthetic in mine and it had over 200K.

This is gonna be a big thread...starting a mineral vs. synthetic thread is like starting a political or religious thread.

          fake rotary dial phones
          fake flowers

fake statistics (did you know 72% of 'em are made up on the spot?)

Meh...I'm tired of thinking up more for the list.

I wouldn't waste my money on the synthetic on a motor over 200K unless you have some kind of special circumstances where the longer change intervals would benefit you.

              Pizza or Chinese?

I was only curious to see if anybody had experience in this, didn't mean to stir up the pot. I have a 5.0L Ford (in the 1987 CV), a 390 cu. in. Ford FE, and a non-running (but with a little work I probably could get it running) flathead, all of which have significant mileage. The latter two are going to end up in projects and will be torn down anyway. When I have asked people around here they say that they don't know because they usually have vehicles that are new and have little mileage. Thanks for the input.

No, no. I know. I'm just kidding around, mostly.

Flatheads like synthetics after a rebuild. You have to break it in with the Dino stuff first though.

I'm running mobil 1 synthetic for a change, so far I really dont notice any difference.

There isn't much of a difference, except for the longer change interval. I benefit from it because of the insane milage I drive. Also, for forced induction engines, especially turbocharged it's added safety again wear and breakdown at higher temps. Also, cold weather climates, the synth's viscosity isn't affected as much as non-synth oil.

I've switched over high mi cars before with no ill effects. Actually, if you use it for a while you'll be amazed at how well it cleans up the inside of an engine. I'm sticking by it, the only reason not to run it is if you can't afford the extra $5. 5qt jugs at walmart are the shit.

I ran synthetic in my VW because of the increased resistance to thermal breakdown.. Air cooled engines really cook normal oil. 1500 miles with dino oil and it was black as tar, but synth was good for about 2500-3000 before it turned really sludge-like.

                            Thanks for the replies

I think I might try synth in my Chevelle first and if it seems to run alright, then I will use it in the CV. Ever since I re-ringed that 305 Chev, it runs a little warm in the summer. This has been an age old discussion that will probably never end between me and my father. Thanks again for the advice!!!
