So you do it...why?Originally posted by 89LincolnTWNcarI hate revving this thing up like that, it seems like after I do that it smells of burnt oil and the exhaust leaks near the headers get worse.

gears, shift kit. Trans Go HP shift kit, its easy, takes a few hours and it makes the tranny a whole different animal.

I was holding it in manual 1 when it went up to 5300 rpm. I shifted it to D at 4500 but the linkage isn't that acurrate so it didn't quite engage 2nd gear till I tapped it again. 5300 rpm in first? That doesn't sound right. Change out the governer to a high speed one while you're doing the shift kit, and make sure your TV pressure is set correctly. It should not go beyond about 4500 with the stock governer unless you were holding it in manual 1, in which case it'll just wind till the motor blows.

That was today, I had it in 1st gear and didn't shift out till about 5300 rpm. I've done that like once btw just to see.
yep only 72K easy miles. I think I can put in a shift kit myself, but I don't know about the rear gears. If I have to take the axels out to put in 3.73 gears, I might as well do the rear disc conversion while im in there

rear gears and a shift kit first......i know your tranny has low miles so it should be fine

Rear gears man. Then a wide ratio kit. And a stall converter. (see my 16 sec lopo post)

Have you at least put a shift kit in it? Those are always helpful. And staying in 1st gear up to 53 mph seems a little excessive. I have 2.73s and I can only make about 46-47 mph in 1st under WOT.

A wide ratio kit for the stock AOD is probably the best trans upgrade and it will make the most difference with a stock rear. I think B&M still carries one for around $500 or less, but I'm not sure if Ford Racing still does.

what can I do to my existing trans or what trans fits a Town Car that is more performance oriented. I can stay in first gear all the way to 53 miles an hour in my current trans o_O. Would closer gears help?Tags: None
