Blown Transmission?

Sorry to hear the bad news. The clicking sound you hear when you put it in park and shut it off is the park lock jumping out of the key gear as it spins down to a stop. See, because you didn't have the drive shaft in you couldn't just stop the tranny from spinning with the engine. It's normal, but it is not very good to do that to the tranny, it may catch and could break it.

Also, it is still odd how it holds the engine down in P. If you do a rebuild, be carefull to check everything. This whole thing may be the result of something breaking in the valve body. One of your solenoids may be jammed or something, and that could cause a clutch pack to engauge when it shouldn't. Which could result in you rebuilding it, and then destroying all your work when you put it back in the car.

Yeah, the fluid in my pan looked like that. Had all the silver junk and the fluid was black and stinky. Was only about 3k old, but it had been on fire. My condolances on your DOA.

that is cluch material, how much is in the fluid? and you prolly will have to take the valve body off to inspect.

Ok, I had the pleasure of droping the transmission pan today, on my day off, for once(I'm sick, SICK OF HIGH SCHOOL hahahahaha!). I checked the shift wheel's operation and it looks ok. Now I looked at everything and I just replaced the fluid and filter a few months ago and I only drove it 4 times. I looked at the fluid and I got this dark gray crap in it, Its like a greasy metallic powder. (I'll snap a few pics soon. Could this be from my clutches? And is there any visible signs of a bad valve body

Almost exactly what mine did. Its fucked. Ask Scott what mine looked like inside. I never saw it.

Okay, I finaly pulled the drive shaft. I wanted to check to see somthing so I started it up. What I thought was a fuel filter/pump problem isn't. When i'm in park the engine feels as though it had an engine brake on it an stalls out,also I cant rev it past 4 grand, it just wont go. When I am in reverse, the same thing happens. Then I shift into neutral and the motor comes back to life and I can rev it fully, also the speedometer is moving like i'm driving(but not goin any where cause the drive shaft is out). Shift it into over drive and also revs and speedo works(same in drive and first) Then I put it into park and I get one wierd sound. It sounds like something is rubbing/scrapping and my speedo is showing 15mph at idle and revs a little bit higher but not fully. I then put it into reverse and it will stall. When i put it back from reverse to park it acts like its in reverse and will stall. Then I shut it off in park and I get this sound as if i pushed in the E-brake(that clicking sound). I'm very short on cash for now and dont want to waste money on a valve body, fluid ect...and find it wont work still. But then I dont want to replace my trans and think a $100 part could have fixed it.

Thanks to Ohio weather which sucks in a big way (as we got close to a foot in snow last weekend) I couldn't work on the merc to find out what is wrong with it. This weekend looks to be ok so I'll try to get it out then and work on it. Lookin forward to a blown head gasket, Cooked transmission, Bad fuel filter or pump.

Park wasn't an engine brake, it would literally seize the motor when I shifted into park. Reverse did the same thing. Could be that when the engine massively overheated, it cooked the fluid and burnt the clutches. The low coolant/high oil does sound like a blown head gasket tho. The sweet puffy exhaust is also a classic head gasket sign.
