    Semi HO update

Well, I pulled the upper and the valve covers. The post run ticking and the valve tap may be one in the same. With the covers off, after i trun the motor with the starter I pinpointed the ticking to the rockers. It feels like theres something tapping on the other end of the pushrods, or valve stems. I checked all the rockers are tight. The pushrods have no slop in them. The motor isn't turning, so the cam is stationary. I believe this leaves two things, My valves are sticking, or the lifters are sticking. I have never heard of anything like this, this is exactly my kind of fucking luck. If its lifters, fine, I'll pull the manifolds and pushrods and replace them. If its the valves, I swear I'm going to fuckin lose it. I have no idea where to go from here to narrow it down. It will run untill it gets warm then it wants to quit.

Should I seafoam it and hope for the best?
Should I just pull the whole damn thing down and replace the lifters and get a valve job?

Right now I'm about to just say fuck it. I'm starting to think somebody ripped me off and sold me heads with some issues. :cuss:

      Got burnt on parts

      Found the problem.

Cyls 3 and 8 are 0 compression. Stuck open valves. The "ready to bolt on heads" I bought turned out not to be as advertised. Now I plan to pull the thing down again, and do a complete valve job. the "ticking" was the valves creaking back up to the closed position. The lack of idle was due to two dead holes.

Beware of buying used heads that are "ready to bolt up". Learn from my experience. I'm now going to eat an expensive gasket set and thats not to mention many, many hours of work.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'll post when she's done.

Thanks for posting what the problem was so others can avoid that pitfall. Hopefully the pistons were not damaged from the hung open valves. I doubt they were.

When you pull it apart again, why not do the full HO conversion?

Agreed, a beating would not be unfair. The reason I don't do a full HO, mainly budget. Also, 88grandmarq has posted several times of the very modest, if any, gains by doing the cam, injectors and ecm. I have considered finishing the HO with the cam at a later date. (I already have a mark 7 ecm and 19 lb injectors on the shelf)

Only thing is, if the heads, etc are off, its not that much more work to do the cam swap as well. A stocker cam can probably be found fairly cheaply on either ebay or one of the Mustang forums.

I'm very happy with my HO swap, but that was a complete engine, not a conversion job. At least half of the added power on an HO is from the heads though.
