    Car sputtering?

    Ok first I thought maybe it was loss of spark because the spark plugs were bad and after I changed them it was gone.

    Than Yestuday morning it was poring (My air filter isn't oiled :drug: ) So I thought I sucked in some water. Which I think I most likely did. This morning though it was sputtering as well maybe there is still some water in there?

    It stopped after the car warmed up and such. Blaze said it could be me TPS or Tempature sensor.

    Anyone else have any ideas?

    check the ecm for codes

    1986 lincoln towncar signature series. 5.0 HO with thumper performance ported e7 heads, 1.7 roller rockers, warm air intake, 65mm throttle body, 1/2" intake spacer, ported intakes, 3.73 rear with trac lock, 98-02 front brake conversion, 92-97 rear disc conversion, 1" rear swaybar, 1 3/16" front swaybar, 16" wheels and tires, loud ass stereo system, badass cb, best time to date 15.94 at 87 mph. lots of mods in the works 221.8 rwhp 278 rwt

      Its not water if it spits and sputters for a long time after it happened. Maybe 30 seconds. At the most.

        Yea. I reallized that when I started it today and it did it after it was gone. So I don't know what it is. It goes away when the car warms up.

          This is embarassing. The coolant is bone dry. Checked it after my heat was blowing out cold air when I stop at traffic lights. I don't think I have a leak.... I never see any puddles in the driveway.

          Could that cause it?

            um yea..........you better hope you didnt cook the motor.........just cause you dont see a puddle doesent mean it's not leaking........the coolant had to go somewhere be it internal or external it's going somewhere

              Checking the fluid levels every once in a while is a good idea.

              Since you say there are no visible leaks, re-fill the cooling system with fresh coolant and keep an eye on things.
              The best time to check your coolant level is in the morning, before you start the engine and after the car has been sitting over night.

              A couple things I would suggest.... 1) replace the radiator cap. 2) pull the CTS sensor out and polish the sensor tip with a scotchbrite pad.

              The ECT/CTS sensor is pictured on the left.

                I refilled it and the raditaor is cracked ont he passenger side. It is leaking so, I need to get a new one. I don't think anythign is wrong with the motor. It's cold out so.. yea. It wouldn't have been worse in the summer.. but most likely it would have been more notical in the summer. The sputtering stops after the car warms up though. So... I don't know if it was caused by that or if it's just coiecedental.

                I figure I'll just get a good perfomace raditor for the new motor while I am ti since I have to replace it. Does anyone know how much dueces was? Tom told me to get the one he had. And which one is it?

                  condensation under the cap could do it too. Pull it and see if there is any moisture. Depending how old it is, you might want to change it too. Might also have some water in the fuel. I'd toss a new fuel filter on there and run a bottle of drygas or similar through the system.

                    a stock 2 or 3 core replacement radiator should work fine.

                    check out www.advanceautoparts.com
                    look up your year car with a 5.8L engine, it will give you several radiator options, including HD 2 and 3 core radiators.

                      I got a stock replacement one for a 5.8l for 130 bux. It was the same size as the 5.0l one. It didn't give the specifications for it so I don't know if they were diff or not. It's a stock replacement one. Whatever.

                        Since caps are almost free, and yours is probably worn anyway, not a bad idea to just change it.

                            Actually most of the time radiator caps don't either. Buy new of both.

                              O. We are talking about distrubotor caps. Well I do have the little rubber cover for it so that should prevent that. :-P. I'll check though.
