I'm just wondering if anyone has blown a HG in 302. reason im asking is because I found a 90CV (mass air) perfect body and very decent landu top white(body)/Blue top.... the older gentlemen who owns the vehicle says it needs a HG cuz its blown and has been parked since... I have on more then 1 occassion have boiled the shit outta the coolant system once being a tooth off on the distributor and another with a shattered harmonic balencer and a thrown waterpump belt and still driving untill the check engine light came on... but still no smoke and no problems.... so is it possible, im sure it is! but what kinda shit would i be lookin at, they have another motor for it but they want 200.00 and it dont look that good. someone offered him 600 for the car but never came back. what would yall offer if anything?

A compression test would tell. Iron block engines with iron heads aren't usually known for blowing head gaskets, but its entirely possible. Mass air 5.0 Vics are extremely rare. I'd offer $400 and see what they say. Head gasket job on a 5.0 is not a big deal really. Find out exactly why he says its a popped gasket. It might be something else entirely, but even if its not, provided the car hasn't been run like that and the oil isn't full of water, its fixable for probably less than $150 in parts.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

Thanks gadget for the info! I was thinking the same thing about the head gasket.. the guy said that it kept over heating so who knows hopefully its just a stuck thermostat or bad pump! oh by the way its got 87K on it and the interior is immaculant! if the head gaskets are blown, what should I do? just pop off the heads and clean em off or send the heads to the shop and have them deck checked and shaved?1987 MGM 126K 2" True Duel flowmaster 40's 3" tipped exhuast, Tinted 20% all way round, individual bank A/F guages, tach.

I'd do better heads and leave the rest of the motor alone myself. Should make decent power, and its not much work especially if the heads need to come off anyway.
If you wanna keep it stock, I'd do the straight edge test on the heads to check them for warpage, and as long as its OK (and usually it is, iron doesn't warp that often unless its been really really overheated) just clean the heads and block, and re-install them. Might wanna replace the head bolts but its not required. I've seen a few cases of broken head bolts on 5.0 motors, so it might not be a bad idea to do it as a preventative measure. I didn't change mine when I rebuilt the motor, they now have like 150k on the stock bolts or something.Last edited by gadget73; 05-07-2006, 03:14 AM.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).
