HAHA, some idiot must have pushed it through LOL. No worries, it's just a dust plug for the fill tube hole. You can toss it.Last edited by Blaze86Vic; 05-06-2006, 07:59 PM.

it has awhining sound now as it shifts into OD. it has a delayed shift only going into OD. i dont know if it isnt getting enough pressure or if the transmission is going out. if i take off full throttle, it shifts fine, but if i take it easy and let it shift into OD like i was driving normally, it hesitates and whines as it shifts into OD.

My car had one when I serviced the original tranny too. I was scared too, thought some part had fallen out of my transmission and it was gonna asplode. 126k of towing service left the trans fluid black as used motor oil, but it shifted just fine once it had fresh fluid. Completely amazed me. I'm sure it would have died eventually but I caught it on fire and made sure it was good and dead.
As for the shifting, whining into OD isn't normal. Whining in first and second is typical AOD behavior tho. If you're driving normal, how fast are you going when it hits overdrive? If its under about 45-50, the pressure is too low and should be bumped up a bit.
Oh, what kind of fluid did you use? And did you drain the converter too, or just the pan?86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

i only drained the pan. it is dexron3 mercon. it says it works on all General Mistakes, and FORD automatic transmissions where dexron or mercon is used. it tries to hit OD around 35 or 40. how do i adjust the pressure? i hear the whining sound from the firewall when driving. i think it is in the front of the transmission that is making the noise like the torque converter is my guess.

Thats the right fluid. You need more pressure, it shouldn't be in OD till like 45. For how to adjust it, check here: http://www.grandmarq.net/vb/showthread.php?t=2601
The whining could be the pump, or it might be low on fluid. How much did it take? Should be right about 12 quarts to read full when hot and idling.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

since i changed the fluid in the pan, it only took 4.5 qts. i added to the bottom of the hatch marks where it states on the dipstick.
ok...i adjusted it and it shift into OD between 50 and 55. it is set at the minimum mark it suggests on the page w/ information. if i set it at mid it shifts hard and goes into OD around 75mph. had to bring it back down to shift where it was supposed to. does anybody think thjat the rearend could be the culprit. i drove on a empty blacktop road and got it to whine again. i turned my head and now sounds like it comes from the rear. i am gonna have another person drive while i ride in the backseat to listen where it is coming from. i did notice the rearend was leaking but i wonder why it only does this as it goes int OD. i will find out tomorrow. i am gonna pull the rear cover and reseal it and put fresh oil in it. i love buying new cars so i can work on them. keeps me away from the g/f wanting to argue about me spending so much time on my car. if it were her car she would be asking me to figure out the prob and fix it. so oh well for her. i wish i had the money to go to school for this work so i could make better money. oh well, just a dream.Last edited by 87_crown_vic; 05-07-2006, 10:27 PM.

Check the oil level in the rear too. It could be bearing noise but it shouldn't matter what gear its in, it would just be speed dependant. Sometimes you'll notice driveline vibration more in overdrive just becuase the torque converter is locked and the gear ratio is high.86 Lincoln Town Car (Galactica).

when she shifts into OD she falls on her face and makes the noise. i let of and feather the pedal to keep her going to stop the noise and keep it in OD. wish there was a panther mechanic to help fix this problem sooner that costing more later. hopefully i can straighten this out tomorrow. my g/f is getting upset w/ how i have been working on the car tryin to get this figured out. she knows i am pissed and getting fed up looking for the problem. but i keep at it knowing that it will be a great runnin beast when i am done.
