    IAC question

I'm having a rolling idle/surging problem. I suspect the IAC. First I took it off, cleaned it and reinstalled it. Didn't make a difference. Today I went to the wreckers and grabbed 2 more that visually looked good. I cleaned them out and installed them. Neither one made a difference. I tried running the car without the IAC plugged in and it idles. Idles low and rough but it doesn't roll and stall. As soon as I connect the plug I hear a loud sucking noise, like having the air intake tube off, and the car dies. Can I assume all 3 IACs are bad or should I be looking elsewhere?

Another issue that could cause that is the air temp sender and the coolant temp sensor. Those are generally the culprits for alot of the issues with these motors.

If its idling with the IAC unplugged, you might have a vacuum leak somewhere too. Might want to inspect the vacuum hoses for cracks or breaks.

Well I just realized my "engine" light doesn't work. No wonder it wasn't on LOL. I checked the codes and it gave me 22 which is the MAP and 31 which is egr or pve (something like that). I think I'm gonna get a MAP and see what happens.

BTW i've read on Mustang sites that the car will and should run with the IAC disconnected...just with a lower idle.

Engine light only comes on when your overheated or theres very low oil pressure.

Those MAP sensors almost never go bad. Check the vacuum line to it first. If its fine, snag one from the junkyard.

I've only had to replace one, on my 4door '84 GM.

I figured I'd replace the vac line first so today I pulled the upper intake. Do I need to replace the upper to lower gasket? It still looks good. I know I need an EGR to upper gasket, but what about the throttle body to EGR? There was no gasket there just that black gasket maker, it looks like.

                          I need a manual.

Oh ya. Can I use regular old vacuum line for the PVC or should I order new tubes from Ford? It looks fine but...do they leak often?

Its fuel hose for the PCV line. 5/16". nothing special.

The upper to lower gasket you can possibly re-use if it didn't tear but it would be a good idea to replace it if its stuck to the intake. There is a gasket betwee the upper intake and EGR spacer, and another between the EGR and throttle body. These must be there and not leaking. I'd replace both with new correct gaskets. If the gaskets here don't seal properly it will either suck exhaust gas into the intake around that EGR spacer, or it will suck antifreeze from the EGR cooler, neither of which is desirable.

Nick, here's a pic of my new intake (to the right), notice how I replumbed the PSV so its hose comes from the back of the main air passage right next to the vacuum tree:

Do the same, save yourself the hassle of looping the hose.
