My first thought would be the choke isn't functioning properly, or the needle/seat assembly is worn and leaking fuel into the engine, causing it to flood. That, or the carbbowl is cracked somehow and its dumping a load into the engine when it sits after it gets good and warmed up. I had a Q-Junk do that when I worked at the marina, started fine when cold, warm the motor up and turn it off, and it would just pour fuel into the motor, making it almost impossible to re-start. Hard to say, need more info. What kind of carb, what are you doing with the pedal when attempting to start it when it does this, is there some trick to make it start easier?

Do you have a manual or electric fuel pump?

My thoughts are the fuel is evaporating out of the carb after you park it when it's hot. It takes a few cranks to build the fuel pressure back up in the carb for it to start.

Do you have a spacer between the carb and intake manifold?

            Probably mechanical, it's a stock carb'd app.

I didn't catch he was from Canada, so I thought his '84 had an aftermarket carb.

I'll mention that if i let my car sit for a week without driving it, it needs to crank for 5-10 seconds to get fuel back into the carb. If I've driven it recently, the car fires in 1 second.

Or the coil could be breaking down. Once its warm it has more resistance.

I remember breaking down in our old Donzi once from a failed coil. We took ice packs from the cooler and duct taped them around the coil to get home.

+1, I used to get that once I first started driving my car long distances, but I usually have enough fuel in the bowls for it to fire and then the fuel pump will start pumping fuel into it again.
