    Tranny cooler install ?s

Got my B&M Supercooler (20,500 btu) today from Summit. So glad I got the stacked plate intsead of tube & fin, thing is gnarly, almost bulletproof. Gonna ether mount it outboard of the other coolers, passenger side, right up behind the grill, or underneath one of the other coolers right next to the radiator, leaning towards first.

    My questions are:
    1) my cooler has 1/2 " NPT fittings. This may be a stupid question (don't know what NPT fittings are, didnt see them in Summit catalog), but what kind of fittings do I need to attach hose to the cooler and to the tranny?

    2) what kind of hose (and how much) should I buy?

NPT stands for National Pipe Thread. Its a standard 1/2" pipe thread nipple that you need.

You need transmission cooler line, 3/8" to attach to the stock trans lines. You might want to get a 1/2" to 3/8" reducer to thread into the cooler, and use a 3/8" nipple. As for how much hose, that depends where its mounted. Just don't cut yourself short. You don't want any kinks in the lines.

NPT fittings are commonly refered to as pipe fittings.
Ideally you want (2) 1/2" NPT to -6AN fittings, (2) 1/4" NPT to -6AN fittings, (4) -6 Tube nuts and some 3/8" aluminum line. And re-plumb the whole thing.

This is an old picture (i have a bigger cooler, and aluminum line now, im going to be installing a second cooler soon) but you can see where mine is mounted.

Thanks for clearing NPT up for me. Now, do I want hose or tubing and can I get it at Autozone, Pepboys, Kragen? As far as location goes space is pretty tight cause of other coolers. Have one where yours is and to the right of it also. Plenty of room below (debris?), or in front of (closer to back of grill).

If you put it lower you wotn get as much air flow, put it closer to the grill.

Yes you can use the line from the parts store, just make sure it is ok to use with tranny fluid.

How much heat and how much pressure do I need to worry about? Do I need the heavy duty rubber w/ braided metal covering like they used on the oil cooler? Want to do this properly.

No metal braided hose needed, pressure ain't that high - I run the regular Goodyear transmission hose they sell in the parts store and it's been just fine.

Ask for transmission cooler line. Tell them they keep it in the back on a big roll.
