I'm not really arguing the <50mph, as much as I am the impression that you give saying that they stop shaking past a point. If a wheel or tire is out of balance, it just gets worse and worse with speed. It'll change frequency, but it doesn't go away. Out of balance wheel at 60mph = anoying, at 120mph = scary.

Your right about it getting worse with speed, my original post was too brief...now that I read it again I see how It sounded...
From the standpoint of an everyday service station employee a wheel balancer is used to correct rims that shake at highway speeds. Often customers will report that there car doesn’t shake past 70mph…this is a phenomenon caused by variations of the….as you said it…. “Frequency” of the vibrations. The closer the wavelengths come together the easier it is (especially for uni-body cars) to absorb them. Although in reality the vibration is still there and is likely to return with a vengeance at speeds in excess of 100mph.
I was referring to ones perception of the vibration.
But good point blaze, I didn’t mean to make it sound like the problem went away with speed.

the tires that were on my 97 when i bought it were out of balance, it would shimmy the wheel between 55 and 65 faster or slower and you could not feel it.
