    2005 wheels on a 1996

    Can I put 2005 16" 3496 aluminum wheels on a 1996 with 16" wheels

you'll need spacers as the offset is different.

This is correct, you'll need spacers.
If you don't want to use spacers the wheels can't be any newer than 02 if you're using Ford wheels.
I have found some Chrysler wheels that look just like Ford fanblades in 17" that will bolt right up without
      having to use spacers.

I wouldn't, many do, but spacers suck and often offset the cost of just buying a rim that actually fits.
