    Engine Light Question...

Hey there! I have a quick question that I'm sure someone can answer. What could be the matter with a 351W engine when the engine light comes on at idle, but goes off when you press on the accelerator? It also seems like it wants to die a lot. How would I go about fixing the problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

It may be low oil pressure due to low oil level, or incorrect oil grade, a faulty oil pressure sensor, worn engine bearings and/or oil pump or high engine operating temperature. In my 302 it was the engine bearings.

Low oil pressure most likely. Pull the idiot sender out and hook up a real gauge to see whats going on. Low idle will also make for low oil pressure, so you may have a carb issue if its idling under 650 rpm or so.

If it is low oil pressure, would running a heavier weight of oil help?

It would be a bandaid. If its low, and you're running the correct weight of oil (should be 10w30 or 10w40) then something is wrong. Most likely the main bearings are worn out, but it could be a plugged oil pickup. 351's don't usually have the main bearing problems 302's have, so you'd probably want to look into that. If it is worn out mains, then thicker oil is a fair solution. If its a plugged oil pickup, then thicker oil won't really help and you risk massive damage if you starve the motor for oil flow. Oil pressure is actually less important than oil flow for these motors.
