    Gauge problems

I have a 90 Grand Marquis LS and have a couple of problems with the cluster.

The main odometer does not work meaning the reading does not change. The trip odometer works fine.

The other problem is the coolant gauge stays at 0.

Could these 2 problems be related? Are cluster problems common in these cars?

    Thanks

I did some research about the odometer and found the issue with stripped gears. It sounds easy enough to fix.

Is the coolant sensor just a 1-wire that goes directly to the cluster? It seems like the computer is reading temperature from a different sensor.

The odometer repair, sounds easy, but finding the replacement gear is almost impossible/too expensive than it's worth.

Yes, the coolant temp sender has one wire, it's on the driver's side in the front, on the lower intake manifold.

Try grounding the lead for the temperature sensor. If the gauge pegs, replace the sender.

Yes, the computer reads coolant temp from the ECT, which has two wires, and a completely different set of resistance values from the gauge sender, which is a single wire sensor that grounds through the engine block.
