    Why the noise?

When first started in the morning the lifters in my '86 5.0 (87K miles) sound like either a diesel engine, or, a malted machine clacking away!
The sound goes away as the engine temps rise........anything to be concerned about?? Oil is changed at no more than 3k miles....or sooner.
    Thanks for the enlightenment

What oil filters are you using? Ones with crappy anti-drainback valves are prone to making things clatter for a couple seconds initially. If it carries on for more than a couple of seconds, it sounds like tired lifters. Not much to be done for it short of replacing them. Not usually any special cause for concern.

Sure it's not just lopo knock?

My HO converted lopo sounds like an IDI 6.9 until it warms up. Makes great oil pressure so I don't care.

Back when I had my LoPo opened up for the failed GT40 intake swap I had them look into my valvetrain clatter. I thought I had sticky lifters too but it turned out some of my rockers were trash. New ones in, noise out.

I found a couple shitty rocker arms in mine too when I HO swapped it. The end of the pushrods were chewed up too. It doesn't tick when cold anymore. Does have a bit of valvetrain noise warmed up. Guess that's what happens when you put used parts from like six different engines together. Mine also has stellar oil pressure so no bothers given.
1990 MGM: $50 E7 heads, HO cam, Holley SysteMAX lower intake, HO upper intake with an Explorer TB. LSC ECM. Lincoln logs into stock dual exhaust. K&N drop in air filter. Wide ratio AOD, 2400 converter with a 3.08 one tire fire out back. Car is less slow now. Then there's the '92 Beater. Dual 2.25" exhaust with shiny tips. Rumbles nice. Super slow. Burns oil too.

My worn out roller rockers were clattery, but they got worse as it warmed up. New ones shut it up completely.

At the next oil change, maybe put in one qt of MMO?

I only use the MMO in the gas. Use a Motorcraft oil filter, Proper oil. We are starting to have some cold nights now.

This seems to be super common on these things, almost all of the lopo's I've torn down have been like this.

Mine is probably getting there. Chatters until completely warmed up ... for a while. Zero cares. Still runs.

hm, wonder why lopos would be inclined to chew pushrods. Honestly I've not had one in so many years its not something I'd ever have thought about. I never tore mine down when I wiped out the bottom end.
