Oil pump replacement - Motor still in car

Yeah, A daunting task I am about to do to justin's car.

Hopefully I can just undo the motor mounts, pull the motor up as far as I can get it, drop the pan as far as I can, zip the pump out, zip the new one in, fasten everything back together, prime the motor, then mount it back up and fire it up.

    What does everyone think?

dont need to pull the engine.......lift the engine with a cherry picker, you'll have to undo the motor mounts and remove the starter.......lower the pan, it will not come out, you will have just enough room to remove the pump and the pickup

I did the oil pump in-car on my Mustang. I had to raise the trans and engine to get the oil pan out of the chassis. If you have the pan off, maybe check out his bearings if that is why he as low oil pressure. Maybe they are the wrong size. Plastigage would be useful.

                      :stupid:
At least pop a rod and a main off to see if they're down to copper. If they are, time for new bearings. From past experience, low oil pressure is more often worn bearings than bad pumps but I have been wrong before. I'd also consider replacing the pickup, or at an absolute minimum, yanking it and making sure its nice and clean. If its clean, no need to replace it but make sure its not all sludged up. Make sure you put a new gasket between the pickup and pump. There may or may not be one between the pump and the block. I don't remember for sure, but I think there is.

i believe that this motor might have been recently rebuilt. It was just reassembled with a used oil pump

I'd still yank one and look at it. Might have been oil starved and trashed the bearings. I'm just one of those paranoid "have to know" people, and besides, its fairly easy while you're there with the pan off already. better safe than sorry.
