    C-4 swap

what all would be needed to do a C-4 swap? I know tranny, bell housing, torque converter, fab a new tranny mount. Id most likely buy a Kickdown cable for it. What about flexplate? Will the one for a AOD work?

Most likely you would also need to lengthen or shorten you driveshaft and put a different yoke on it. IIRC SFI approve flexplates arent to much, so if the aod one wont work you could buy one of them. You might also need a new shifter.

You'd need to check into the wiring for back-up lights and such if you plan to have it on the streets.

The shifter you have in there will work on the C-4, you just need to consult with the installation guide to make sure you route the cable properly and use the proper shifter arm on the transmission.

I believe you'd need a C4 flexplate, but I can make some phone calls tomorrow to find out exactly, if no one else verifies one way or the other.

You should not need to "fab" a tranny mount. You see where the cross member bolts to the frame, there should be two whole, the second pair is for use with the C4, from back in 79-81 panthers. So you should be able to just purchase one.

Your driveshaft should work as well. A c6 has a massive output yoke the c4 does not.

I was told the short-tail AOD was dimensionally the same as a C4, so in theory the driveshaft ought to be the same. Not sure about the mount points but there are two on the frame as Blaze mentioned. Probably just a matter of moving it and changing the mount to the 79-81 type.

Just use a 164 tooth C-4 tranny and it will bolt right in using your factory tranny mount, flexplate and driveshaft.

for a 164-tooth tranny. Is that a common one? Ill most liekly end up buying a tranny from some place like Performance Automatic.

Yep the 164T is the common one. There was a smaller less common bellhousing/flexplate used in the Mustang II.

164 tooth was used on truck 302's and all 351's. Some larger cars got a 164 tooth on 302's. 157 tooth was used on most car 255's 302's and 289's. The 148 tooth is the rare one as it was only used on Mustang II's.

                      C-4 swap

I did this swap on the racecar.

                      Here is a detailed explanation.

I'm debating the manual or a C-4. Basically I am going for reliability first, and a C-4 certainly would. Quesiton I couldn't find in the archives... is it the small or large bellhousing that would fit our cars? Both on TCI's webpage say fit "289-351". Thanks.

The 164 tooth is also known as a 'large bell' where the 157 tooth is known as a 'small bell'.

Be sure and get a 70 or newer C-4 as they have a stronger 26 spline input shaft.

It's how much hp u can put to the track...

Let's seperate the men from the boys and put that power to the track using street tires and stock suspension components

What is a good stall to run?

Car weighs about 3500 im guessing
                        Holley 650 DP on a carb'd 351W that is limited to 6000RPM

3.55 gear, 28" tall drag radials

Not daily driven, but i think i can get away with a rather tame stall since it builds power all through the power band.

Future plans call for a set of Windsor Sr. heads and about a 100-125 shot

I'm no expert, Duce, but from what I've read, 2,500-3,000 should be a good stall for what you're doing.

It won't stall that high when street driving, only when you're linelocking or powerbraking.

A friend of mine who runs a Mustang shop said he has a big bellhousing for you, if you end up needing it. I didn't get a price from him, but he's very reasonable.

...in case you can't find the right one for some reason.
