    Radiator ducting

My car cools fine unless i sit for a while not moving. To enhance airflow through the radiator i have desided to make some ducting for the radiator.

Today i made patterns. i will be using 4 pieces, one piece will cover the gap between the upper crossmember and the header panel, two side pieces that direct all airflow through the grill into and thru the radiator and a air damn, which i need to get from the junkyard.

Once these are installed the majority of the air that comes through the grill will be forced through the radiator. the airdam will force air from under the car up into the radiator. Im going to make the pieces out of 0.030" aluminum.

it is too dark to get pictures right now. Ill try to get pics tomorrow.

Finally made the pieces, although i forgot to take a picture before i installed them. They are riveted to the header panel at the top and to the radiator support at the bottom.

    Passenger side.

turn your head to the left for this one.

    Drivers side.

Sorry for the huge pics, my camera was set on the largest setting.

Interesting....though I'd think that a shroud that covered the whole backside of the rad around the fan would work better while not moving...I'd think the ducting would do more at speed than sitting...

Looks good man! I am still using the factory "cardboard" like things. They seem to be holding up. I would also suggest sealing up the space at the top between the radiator and the front structure. I have a piece of 1" thick foam in there and it looks factory.

You can see it in this pic what I am talking about.

It might not fit with other radiators. although you could trim it to fit i guess.

And Blaze i took you idea. I just went to Home Depot and bought some of that foam. got a 1 1/4" foam strip and wedged it in. also got some thin adhesived backed stuff to go between the ducting and the radiator.

gets up to around 95 in the summer. Even on the interstate in the 80s temp stays at about 185. does not get hotter than that unless im on it hard, or sitting in the staging lanes with a still warm motor.
Im using a 20" diameter electric fan off a 96 Crown Vic. Also have a 31" X 19" Griffin aluminum radiator, for coolant it is tap water and a bottle of water wetter.

It surprised me when I found out straight water cools better than antifreeze.

May run water in the summer to help keep cool while towing

Finished the upper part today. It is made out of .032" 5052 aluminum. I used a surface prep disc in the drill press to finish the surface. It is rivited to the upper radiator suppert.
