If I had to do a second swap I would definitely check the heads before assuming anything!!! Thanks for the 'heads up' on that!
Hahaha! Head puns. The best way to tell is if you have a '96 or a '98 or newer. Then there's no doubt in my mind of what heads it had.

my bro and I both used tfs 1 cams...that's the best off the shelf cam on the planet I swear....the torque curve on the dyno was amazing....FULL torque came on just RIGHT after idle...like 1100 rpms or so and stayed flat lined all the way to 5850 rpms....but the cam had great top end too....kept pulling way past where the old HO cam would quit.

well, because my EGR system is busted and I don't want to replace it It wouldn't really matter if I was throwing enough money at it to upgrade h/c/i, though.

i have seen some 97 explorers with gt40 heads, the easiest way to tell is to count the bars on the head gt40 are 3 bar and the gt40p are 4 bar.
it is a little bit of an odd angle but you an get an arm back there and feel the bars and count them.

Go figure, a hybrid head.
There was no hybrid head. F3ZE and F77E are the only 2 head castings you will find on an Explorer.

My 98 exploder motor had internal egr and the spot on the #5 runner for the atc. Most of the dates on the stickers on parts were january '98. P heads. Lots of oddities through the years.
