    Rear crossmember

mrltd has been talking about the additional crossmembers that the police and wagons got. Im comparing my 85 sedan from to my 97 PI frame, the crossmembers should be the same being as the 97 frame is almost identical to the box frame.

this is the end of the rear frame rails on the 85.

notice that there is no frame parts connecting the two rails.

    Here is the 97

the crossmember on the 97 is about 1/16" thick.

You could replicate a brace like this with some 3" C-channel steel with speed holes to reduce weight welded to each frame rail.

Yup, that's it...Does the front of the car also have it? The diagrams from the manuals I have seen show the same deal on the front end...

That's kinda stupid...Why isn't that tab connected to the crossmember? That'd stiffen it up even more....

    Thanks for the pics!

Yes the front has one also, the power steering cooler and the second tranny cooler are mounted to it.

What y'all need are TCs - these get the front and rear crossmembers, welded the right way too

I've seen those frame crossmembers on box TC's in the yards,I've often thought about trying to get them and see if they would fit on the LTD.Now I'm definitely gonna harvest a set next time I go.I wonder how much of a bear it's gonna be getting those rusty bumper impact shocks out....

The crossmember is welded to the frame, y'all are much better off getting some C-channel steel and fabbing one on yer own.

Damn,I thought it may have been welded to the frame when I looked at one on the Towny in the yard.I may just end up fabbing one myself, unless I can find a good cheap plasma cutter, then I will get the set off the TC.Eather way I definitely am gonna have to have a set now.

actually instead of the C-channel, some 1.75" .120 wall DOM steel would be a better choice, it is much stiffer than c-channel

+1 If I had the money i'd go for it. Older body, newer frame, and the engine would be a pushrod V8.
