seems like the worst it could be is a 3.08, same as my current gears. the guy has no idea what gears or diff is inside the rear end but for 30 bucks...worst case scenario, it's a 3.08 open like mine, and i'll have an extra one to take apart and put back together.

It should say on a tag on the rear end what the ratio is.

                something like 3L73, 3 55, 4L10, etc. L meaning traction-lok

should just bolt up... i think, however from what i have seen most rangers came with 3.55 or 4.10 gearing

Careful you don't get a 7.5 rear from a Ranger. No 2.3 or 3.0, Only 4.0L trucks had 8.8's. Most common gear is a 3.55, maybe 3.73 on 4.0L. 3.27 and 4.10's pop up occasionally. 3.08 are rare in Rangers.

Only Ranger to get 31-spline was FX4 Level II.

                      Bingo!

But FYI, some later model 3.0 rangers did get the 8.8.
This was when the EDGE package came out and all the tire sizes started getting bigger.

But yeah, if the 97' ranger your looking at has a 4.0L engine, you should be good to go.
