Brakes and transmission on 1986 Crown Vic

    Hi

    1986 Crown Vic LTD.

When braking the vehicle pulls up really well. But when parked at lights with your
foot on the brake pedal, it will slowly drop to the floor. Have to pump the brake to
    keep it hard.

As for the gearbox, it shifts down a bit hard and thuds in succession when downshifting. Slowing down.

Also the speedo said 45 when it felt like driving at 60mph.

RE braking: Check the brake fluid level in the master-cylinder. Could be a leaking brake-line.

sounds like a leak in a line, or a failed caliper or wheel cylinder. Pull the wheels off and inspect the brakes if you haven't done so. Any leaks should be reasonably obvious if it sinks down like that. If no leaks can be found, suspect the master cylinder itself. If there is wetness between the MC and the booster, the MC is toast, and the booster also should be changed.

The AOD is known to be somewhat clunky, particularly at low throttle upshifts. Its probably normal. Its probably worth looking at the rear trans mount and the U joints in the driveshaft for slop though. Also make sure the trans crossmember isnt rotted off. If you can pick the crossmember up by hand, thats not normal. They have been known to break right at the ends where the bolts go through though.
