Transmission oil leak

    I have a hard time imagining how RTV or anything else might help with a leak between a rotating shaft and a seal. Has anyone ever made this work?

    The only thing I can think of is get something like an o-ring or part of another seal to act as an outer seal by using RTV to secure it to the outside of the existing seal.

    Or I guess maybe put a thin film of grease on the shaft so the RTV can cure around the seal without sticking to the shaft?

      Sly, I'm pretty sure I had a tail shaft seal on the '91 replaced by my regular mechanic for like $60 or 120$ it was one of those. I was leaving a lot of smoke down the highway, I'm just glad I noticed that day before it started pouring rain, I would have never seen it. Should be pretty cheap for proper repair.

        it's been "properly" repaired 3 times already and still has a small leak (like add a quart every 6 months to a year). I'm not paying another shop to jack with that unless I'm getting the entire trans rebuilt. I have the tools to remove the driveshaft and do it myself if needed. Maybe just take the drive shaft out and put a dab of ultra copper on with a new seal.

          RTV on the outside won't seal it, and it won't seal it to a rotating shaft. The only way to fix it is to fix it. If that involves pulling the shaft to fill and file it, so be it. You can melt brass into those and fill grooves, but it will not last as long as a repair sleeve or a replacement yoke.
