Original style of underhood wiring harness tape wrap

On my '87 sedan, most of the wrapping on the underhood wiring harnesses (ie. along firewall) is turning to dust. Was this originally a cloth tape, or some sort of thin adhesive-backed foam?

In some places there was that fabric wire tape that creates that ungodly mess when you go to unwrap it, but as far as the main harness across the firewall in the engine bay that should just be a large plastic wire loom. Mine is cracked in a few places, but mostly still together.

Under the loom is non-adhesive vinyl tape. You can find that on ebay if you look for non-adhesive harness tape.

The cloth tape is mostly used where wires split out of the main bundle.

Thanks, guys. I didn't realize they used non-adhesive tape on the wiring itself.

I think this is what's disintegrating on my car. It's only wrapped around the loom in a few locations.
