    The MAF is used as a connector between the air box and the intake tube. It came with the car, and it was easier to just use it than to make something to eliminate it.

            my biggest issue would be finding the late aod with the right bolt pattern for a modular.

                Doesn't matter. Just remove whatever is in the car, and install the trans you want. The AOD only had one bolt pattern. Ford actually made the early modular engine with a different block to bolt it to the AOD.
