In windows (as of XP and later), right click on the file, "Send To" menu, then "Compressed File".

Hm, maybe it was the xlsx. I think I typed something in there that didn't belong. Didn't do anything special though, just uploaded it like I would a picture.

Whats the file extension, just to be sure its not that? I think I only added .xls and .xlsx.

Just looked at the attachment settings. I updated the mime type for xlsx, but everything else looked fine. It should work.

You could also zip it and then upload it.

add .xls and .xlsx to the acceptable filename extentions for posting attachements? I can look into it later when I get home.
