    New here.. =-D

Hey, wow... Wish I had found this while I had owned my previous 3 Grand Marqs. I had an '86, '87, and a '91...

Just traded my motorcycle for a car that made me cry when I saw it... Not a GM but a mint '79 LTD Landau. =-)

Gonna ask some questions on that one.

Ok, I've never owned a carbureated (sp?) vehicle before. I know it needs a new fuel pump as that was hemorrhaging gas all over the motor. I'm having that replaced tomorrow. But, also, the carburetor was dripping fuel from the front. Not much. Could that be a stripped connection or bad hose or something along those lines? Should I rebuild/replace it?

It needs a headliner... that's the only thing cosmetically wrong with my new baby... Any suggestions on how to go about that? Price? Tips?

I have more, but need a minute to think.

    But... Hey everyone!

Am I allowed to post pictures of my new baby (and previous babies) in this thread?

      Okay... I will then!

Oh, also added those questions to my initial post. Please answer if you can!

This is my new LTD, "Handsome":

This is what was my very very very favorite GM before it got rear ended by a semi skidded around and t-boned a Blazer, my '86 "Beast":

And after (I cried for days straight after this happened. It was like my heart was ripped out. It had belonged to my Papa before me. I swear this car loved me back)...

      My '91, "Junior":

And last but not least, my '87, "Tank" (I cried when I had to sell him):

Wow!! You've owned more Panthers than I have. My first was a '92 CV. I currently own two Panthers and a Barge-body TC.

I learned to drive in my Papa's '86 Grand Marq.

I'll never forget that car. I lost a piece of my heart when it was totaled.
I kept his cross that was in it when I had to let it go. I've had it in every GM I've owned since. Keeps me safe.

I love my Grand Marqs. Best cars I've ever owned. It's how everyone knows me. "Heather, the girl with the Grand Marquis." I've felt naked driving a Chevy Lumina for almost the past year. I'll keep that as my daily driver, but "Handsome" is my baby through and through.

The LTD is nice, but I do wish it was a GM instead. But I love him anyway.

          I'm addicted to these cars!

This one I just got will be for cruises and car shows.

              Hi, welcome!

I'm assuming your car must have the Variable Venturi carburetor, same as my '89 P72 has. Does it look like this?

Where is the leak? If it needs to be rebuilt, it's not nearly as difficult as some like to make it out to be. There's an article in our tech section that I wrote on how to do it.

EDIT: Sorry, missed what you said in the first post. If it's leaking from the fuel inlet fitting, more than likely the fitting is just loose, or as you suggested, stripped out. Have you tried tightening it at all to see if the thing has just vibrated loose a bit?

Well, I just got the car today. I can tell you that it's the 302 motor, not sure what carb.

Ok, this is not my car's engine, but this picture allows me to point out where the fuel drippage can be seen... The arrow points as best it can to where it can be seen. You can see it just looking right under the air filter in the front.

I just got the car today after a lengthy process with an attorney acting for an estate. It's still at the shop where I first looked at it. I was going to drive it home today, but we discovered the bad fuel pump and leaking carb before I could pull it off the lot (thank god). Mechanics are replacing the pump tomorrow, but I still do not want to drive it until that leaking carb is taken care of. I haven't had much of a chance to get under the hood.

Yeah, given the location, I'd say it's an inlet leak. That being said, if it's a VV, there are a couple of possibilities for the source of the leak. One would be the fitting on the end of the steel line that goes into the carb, the other would be the inlet fitting on the carb itself. My guess is that one of them has just come loose and needs to be snugged down a bit. Does the car seem to run all right otherwise?

Oh yeah, car starts right up and runs like a cat on carpet. LOL. We smelled it running rich when I first looked at it, but failed to locate the source of the smell until today. That's why I was confused when the mechanic tried to tell me the carb would have to be rebuilt or replaced, because the car is obviously getting gas and running fine otherwise. It just had an oil and coolant change and new battery installed, after sitting for three years. I know it will need brakes soon as well, and I'm having them change the belts as well. Hoses all looked good and not rotted. It was gone over completely before being started, so I don't understand how they missed the massive fuel pump leak... the carb leak I can understand since it is literally just a DRIP. What worries me most about that drip is that it's dripping down right onto the plugs.

Well, the first thing I'd try is tightening up those two fittings to see if that takes care of it. Until you get a chance to do that, if you can avoid driving the car, it would probably be wise, as it obviously is a fire hazard. We wouldn't want you burning up that pretty car, or more importantly, yourself.

Yeah, I'm thinking I'll have it towed (thank god for AAA free towing) to my favorite mechanic. Sparks Computerized Car Care. Greg always does right by me. I'll have to call and see what they can do. I don't know how well I trust the place that the lawyer took it to.

I definitely do NOT want to burn my pretty car or myself. LOL. I got a steal on this thing! I traded my $750 motorcycle for it!

Nice! Just so happens I paid $750 for the car in my signature right now, but I paid cash, which doesn't have nearly the same "cool" factor as a motorcycle.

What kind of bike was it, by the way?

It was an '83 Suzuki GS450A (Suzukmatic).. cool bike in mint cond. Just never really rode it as much as I though I would.

Probably a good choice, all things considered. A car is a much more comfortable choice for transportation in Michigan winters.
