99 town car vs. 87 grand marquis.... which is better?

well as i said before i am looking at a 1987 grand marquis with only 35k miles for $2300..... but today i found a 99 lincoln town car with only 32k miles on it.

It is white with grey leather, fully loaded signature series, with moonroof and 6 disc cd changer. And only 32k miles, it is in great shape, only problem i found was that the rear pass side window didnt go down. I think i can get it for $5500.

so my question is, what car is the better deal and the better car?

The 87 is nice and a 1 owner and i really like the body styling and red interior and roof.
the 99 is very nice too. but is also newer and more optioned....

so what do you guys think and what would you go for?

yeah i dont really like the continentals as much... they are just a fancier taurus to me...
as for the price on the 87 i would be more comfortable at $2000, but he won't go any lower.... he dropped from 3000.

i think the price on the town car however is pretty good.

The '87 is more rare with that kind of mileage. The price seams good if it's in the kind of condition 35k miles suggests.

The town car would more trouble free, drive better with more acceleration and gas mileage. If you do alot of driving a year this might be a better idea. Of coarse you'd be starting at 3 grand more. Refer to kbb.com for price info for the town car. Generally between wholesale and private party is a good deal. The 32k makes it very desirable too.

I bought my '85 with 42k miles a couple years ago and like it alot for it's style and character. You have to have a certain kind of love for these old cars though. Alot of little things need fixing along the way too.

The town cars are nice. I mean I love them and all but compared to my '87 Marquis a new town car is boring and mundane. I am biased but you don't have to worry about crazy electronics in the Marquis. Cheaper on insurance then a newer towncar. Don't know why? No worries about a sagging rear-end like a town car has tendency of doing after a while. And I know the 4.6 is refined and efficient but they're are more Problems it seems with them over time then 5.0. My just be my findings. I'm eclectic and I love old boxes. So in the end it's all up to you and what your prefer. good luck!

well, my question would be what do you want to do with the car? If you want to get in it and drive it to work regularly without having to fuss with it, the newer one is probably a better idea just because its 12 years newer. The box is far more likely to have age-related failures, though generally speaking they are probably cheaper and easier to fix, particularly if you're working on it yourself.

That said, I like the styling of the box, particularly the 87- Grand Marqs quite a bit better than the 98+ Towncar but if I needed a reliable daily driver, I'd probably go with a newer vehicle that I didn't like quite as much just because I wouldn't be as pissed if it got a door ding.

well the car will be my daily driver. I want something reliable that i can drive to work everyday and that i can take on a long trip over the summer maybe. I do love the style of the 87 but the 99 town car is good looking too. I like the idea of having something newer. I have 3 older cadillac fleetwood broughams stored away right now, so something newer would be nice for daily stuff.

i am kind of leaning towards the town car now. i like the low miles and the extra options.

I worry that with the 87 i will have more problems to fix, seeing as it hasnt been driven much over the past couple years. and it has a few small rust spots starting. but still is in reallt nice condition and has the low miles and awesome interior.

My '88 Grand Marquis logs in 50-100+ miles everyday. She has had her share of issues due to age and things going wrong, but is yet to leave me on the side of the road.

My 87 Grand Marquis was my best overall car, most comfortable seating position, very reliable (then, now it's old).....

My 97 Grand Marq did many things better. Handled better, better gas mileage, more (unmodified) power, ABS, wonderful very accurate and controllable cruise control, much better ATC, and the 99 TC would have that plus the good brakes. I wonder what year the watts linkage started?

That said, the boxes still have more class imo, a lot more, and apples to apples at about the same age/mileage had less niggling issues. Of course there's that age thing again.

Sounds like you're got a great problem

I've never been a fan of the old box panthers. The "whale" marquis and towncars are by far my favorite. I love my 06. It will be my daily driver until the wheels fall off, and with 40,000 miles it better be a long time before that happens, lol.

The only advantage the box has is that it is cheaper to fix, but since it is older it may be prone to break-downs than the '99 so it's really 6 in one hand and half-dozen in the other.

Go with the one you like the best.

Clearly the 87. Make sure it's not a rot box though.

well here is a pic of what the 87 is almost identical to.... the top might be a little more red on the car i am looking at...

and here is what the 99 town car looks like, its sig series with moonroof but it does not have the chrome rims like this one in pic. i would however add them with vogue tires
