i recently bought a 98 grand marquis and i want to put a nice flowmaster exhaust on it, the only problem is i'm in Ontario Canada and we have to have ( like many places) emissions tests done on our cars. i want it to be nice and loud but not so loud that i cant hear myself talk to people in the car. what i want to know is will the rear cats being removed cause it to fail an emissions test? and what do you recommend is a cheap good sounding LOUD exhaust ( no straight pipes please haha) i was considering cherry bomb glass packs or Flowmaster 40s with a cheap custom cat-back exhaust i need the most cheap method possible due me being 19 and not having much money. thanks alot!

From another 19 year old ontario guy:
you will get pulled over. often. if you run 2 stock cats and glass packs.
rear cats will probably not cause it to fail emissions (unless someone notices it's missing a cat, but no one checks), but it will mean your car has to be in good tune to pass. What I mean is, you reduce the room for poor condition you will have.
What's the purpose for removing the rear cats? What do you hope to gain? Just curious.
If you remove the cats and have obviously non-stock mufflers (As in, look under and it says "CHERRY BOMB" on a bright red tube) you will leave yourself open to a couple different tickets if a cop feels like it.
Personally, I'd go with the stock exhaust and some flowmasters or magnaflows (or other performance mufflers, ask your local speed shop) and see how it sounds/feels.
Where are you in Ontario? We have a few guys here from southern ontario.Last edited by johnunit; 01-31-2011, 04:47 PM.

well according to guys on youtube, without the cats cut off flowmasters and similar exhausts wont be much louder than stock. I'm near Oshawa Ontario and it seems so far that cops around here dont rele care that much. i have a few friends who have ridiculous cars and have never been pulled over for the look or sound of their cars ( speeds a different story haha). a friend of mines got a flat black 78 eldorado with straight pipes for example, thats a 500 cubic inch engine so its FUCKIN LOUD and we've driven straight past cops. So i have no clue what to do haha.

I guess "loud" is relative, but it's hard to get a good idea of volume based on youtube videos. If you watch some vids of my car (currently stock exhaust) you'd think it had a super-smooth idle, loud (for stock) deep engine note at full throttle, and makes a loud popping noise when you rev it and let off, none of which is true.
Some have had success with just running straight pipes after the cats, which is cheap because all it takes is removing the mufflers. Maybe get a piece of straight pipe put in where the mufflers are, and if that's too loud put in performance mufflers of some type?
Is this a dual exhaust or single exhaust car? It will make a difference in volume and performance.

for example even something like this would be nice with maybe a little less "popping" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8NK79...eature=related

That is actually a member here (same username I think). The popping is probably largely a function of the cats being removed.
He has Dynomax Race Bullets. Those have a decent reputation.
The price to install mufflers varies. If you have a sawzall and some time, it's maybe 20 bucks in hardware. I think the cheapest quote I got in Toronto searching around was 40 a side or so. Removing cats, however, you'll have trouble finding anyone who will do it (it's technically illegal). My strong advice would be get someone to put in some straight pipes or a very loud/unrestrictive muffler like the Race Bullets and go from there.

do they do a visual inspection of the emmisions equipment up there or do they just plug it in to the obd2 port?
if you remove your rear cats, you will need a pr of mil eliminators or the check engine light will be on and that fails the obd2 test

don't worry, eventually we turn into complete assholes.
Post plenty of pics (and maybe video of whatever exhaust you end up with) when you can.
