Can over filled Oil throw code & cause hard starting issues??

Recently bought a 1997 Grand Marquis, and I noticed the Oil is probably filled about 1 quart too high. Car will start hard sometimes if I haven't used it for 2 days or more, or in really cold weather 0 degrees F or less. Hold my foot about 1/4 down on gas and crank engine, it will fire right up usually. Check engine light stays on most of the time, sometimes it will go out. Haven't even bothered to check the codes. I notice light ticking/knocking occasionally at startup, it usually goes away after warming up.

Can anyone tell me if there is any real danger is having it 1 quart too high? I will drain some as soon as I get a chance.

Just hoping some @$$hole didn't sell me a half-wrecked motor full of thick 90 weight oil. Seems to run fine otherwise, outside of slightly crappy gas mileage.

Also does this engine have 2drain plugs or deep sumps like the old 5.0? I know that caused overfilling problems with that motor. ANd what is the best brand of dino oil to use in this motor? Some have told me to use 5W20 like the newer cars.

I have a messed up knee and am on crutches at the moment, so it would be a PITA for me to get under the car myself.

    Any help is much appreciated.

I would do an oil change (AND filter). Not sure what is in it now but would go with what you can afford in the PROPER weight (probably 5W20 or 30 as the manual states). THEN see if you have any CEL's and get a code reader and get back to us with them. Where are you located and sorry about the knee!! Bobby

P.S. Only one drain on these so less of a chance of overfilling.
